Yanks’ Farquhar pitches 1st game since aneurysm
Danny Farquhar took the mound Saturday in his first spring training game for the New York Yankees in Bradenton, Florida — his first since the 32-year-old reliever collapsed in the Chicago White Sox dugout on April 20 because of a ruptured aneurysm and brain hemorrhage.
“I felt great out there,” Farquhar said. “I was happy to be back on the mound. Obviously, the results weren’t great but I call it a good day. I felt like a baseball player, again.”
Farquhar allowed three hits and walked two while throwing 19 pitches in the fourth inning. He is in camp with the Yankees on ami- nor league deal. Machado makes quiet Padres debut: Manny Machado’s debut in a Padres uniform was a lot less eventful than his free agency.
The four-time All-Star signed a $300 million, 10-year deal with San Diego late last month. But after a few workouts in Arizona, his Cactus League debut against the San Francisco Giants was rather underwhelming.
The 26-year-old Machado popped out in his first at-bat and drew a walk in his second, and he came out of the game after three innings at third base without getting any action.
Nats’ Zimmerman gets in lineup: Ryan Zimmerman has made his first appearance this spring in the Washington Nationals lineup. Now he wants to be a fixture there. The twotime All-Star was hitless in two at-bats against Minnesota during his first spring training game of the season.
Astros’ Bregman plunked: The Houston Astros’ Alex Bregman was plunked by New York Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia in his first game this spring. Bregman is returning from surgery on his right elbow. After Bregman borrowed an elbow guard from a teammate, Familia drilled him in the left elbow. Bregman says both elbows felt fine after the game.
Tigers 7, Braves 4: Miguel Cabrera connected for his first homer of the spring in Detroit’s 7-4 win over Atlanta. The 35-year-old slugger looks healthy after he was limited to 38 games in 2018 because of a biceps injury. Cabrera singled and walked before hitting a two-run homer to rightcenter field off Jacob Webb in the fifth inning.
