‘Bangin’ Bayou’ tonight at AVA

New salon series launches with music and art of the Louisiana bayou

The Association for Visual Arts begins a new salon-style series tonight, Sept. 28, that will highlight the music and art of black and Latino artists.

House of Views, a series of three, two-hour programs, will open with “Bangin’ Bayou,” at 6:30 p.m. at AVA, 30 Frazier Ave.

“Leading Ladies” on Oct. 19 and “Day of the Dead” on Nov. 16 will round out the series.

A salon is traditionally a gathering of people at a host’s home for entertainment. Somewhat following that format, House of Views will entertain its guests while seeking to increase their knowledge of black and Latino art, music and poetry.

The bayou culture is a key component of black history. From the 18th to the 20th centuries, slaves and free people of color continued the musical and artistic traditions of their homelands to ensure the survival of their African roots. It was within the bayou environment where African Americans began to build communities and initiate businesses. The bayou is the birthplace of jazz and has influenced many other forms of music such as soul and rock ‘n’ roll.

During “Bangin’ Bayou,” many of the participating artists will explain, and some even demonstrate, their art. Guests will enjoy refreshments, live performances and have the opportunity to join in the dialogue with the artists.
