An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt

Lyle Lovett — man of myriad talents — is known for many things.

He’s an actor who has been cast in films such as “The Player,” “Bastard Out of Carolina” and “Cookie’s Fortune,” as well as guest roles on television series “Castle,” “Mad About You” and “Brothers and Sisters.” He even played the role of Balthazar in “Much Ado About Nothing” at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles seven years ago.

He’s the singer who surprised America when he eloped with Julia Roberts in 1993, divorcing two years later.

But first and foremost, he’s known as a legendary singer- songwriter whose career surpasses three decades, includes 14 albums and four Grammy Awards. The Texan fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention- defying manner, which led to his being the recipient of the Americana Music Association’s first Trailblazer Award.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, Lovett will be in Chattanooga for a performance in Walker Theatre of Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave. He’ll be joined onstage by singer-songwriter John Hiatt. “An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt” will begin at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m.

Hiatt signed a recording contract with Epic Records after his song, “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here,” was recorded by Three Dog Night, becoming a Top 40 hit.

His songs have been performed by a Who’s Who of Music that includes Aaron Neville, B. B. King, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Chaka Khan, Delbert McClinton, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Cocker, Keith Urban, Linda Ronstadt, Mandy Moore, Rosanne Cash, Suzy Bogguss, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel.

Hiatt earned a Grammy nomination for his album, “Crossing Muddy Waters,” and, in 2007, was honored with his own star on Nashville’s Walk of Fame. His legacy was further cemented with a pair of accolades in 2008: the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting and his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
