Lee Opera Theatre presenting ‘The Consul’

Lee University School of Music’s Opera Theatre will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Consul” at the Dixon Center Friday through Monday, Feb. 23-26. The center is located at 1053 Church St., Cleveland, Tenn.

Performanc­es begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Monday, with a 3 ••• p.m. matinee on Sunday.

The production is under the artistic direction of Lee University Associate Professor of Voice James Daniel Frost and directed by James Daniel Frost II.

“The Consul” is a three- act opera that won Menotti the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Music and also the 1950 New York Drama Critics’ Circle award for Best Musical. It deals with the social issue of immigratio­n in an unidentifi­ed totalitari­an country.

“This work was written shortly after World War II and remains incredibly relevant today as it explores the lives and struggles of very real people within a very real system of oppression and surveillan­ce,” said James Daniel Frost II.
