‘Company’s’ coming in Dalton

- STAFF REPORT

Artistic Civic Theatre will open six performances of Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company” on Friday, March 16, at the playhouse, 907 Gaston St. in Dalton, Ga.

“Company” is considered a trailblazer of the modern-musical genre. The musical won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book. Unlike traditional musicals that tell one continuous story, “Company” is comprised of short vignettes.

The musical begins on the night of confirmed bachelor Robert’s 35th birthday. Although he hasn’t been able to commit to anyone, all his friends are married or engaged.

Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his friends explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his bachelorhood during a hilarious array of inter- actions.

“Company” features an energetic score containing many of Sondheim’s best-known songs. In addition to the title tune, the score includes “Have I Got a Girl for You,” “Getting Married Today” and “Side by Side by Side.”

Show times are 8 p. m. March 16-17, 22-24; 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18. Tickets are $ 15 adults, $ 13 ages 55 and older, $ 11 students, with a $2 discount for ACT members.
