JAM Fest salutes Billie Holiday
Jazzanooga continues JAM Fest ‘ 18, its monthlong celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, with three programs this weekend. JAM Fest is designed to recognize and celebrate diverse artistic expressions throughout the city with programs presented by local individuals and groups.
› “Rooted in Color — African-American Visual Artist Showcase” will take place tonight, April 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, 1270 Market St.
The free program will showcase an exhibit of works by five local, black artists. The exhibit is designed to create awareness, understanding and support for local African- American arts and artists.
The featured artists are Rondell Crier, James McKissic, Rebecca Love, Josiah Golson and Jody Harris.
› “Don’t Explain — A Musical Tribute to Billie Holiday” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in the Camp House, 149 E. M.L. King Blvd.
Holiday was one of the most influential jazz singers of all time, with a career spanning nearly 30 years. Join Jazzanoo- ga in exploring the life of the legendary Billie Holiday through her music, performed by local jazz/ gospel/soul singer Mary Edwards.
Nicknamed “Lady Day” by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday’s vocal style was strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneering a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo.
Tickets are $15. A cash bar will be provided.
› Sweet Georgia Sound will play a JAM Fest concert on Sunday, April 15, from 1 to 3 p. m. in Miller Plaza, 850 Market St. There’s no charge to hear the local big band and its vocalists.
