Black Angels stop at Signal on Death March tour

- STAFF REPORT

The Black Angels — fivepiece psych rockers from Austin, Texas — will stop at The Signal on Chestnut Street on Friday, April 13, as part of their Death March tour.

The tour is in support of last year’s album, “Death Song,” their first full-length release in four years.

Written and recorded, in large part, during the 2016 election cycle, the music on “Death Song” served as part protest, part catharsis in a social climate that was dominated by division, anxiety and unease, according to a news release.

Since forming in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have become standard- bearers for modern psych- rock. The New York Times says, “They play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it.”

Opening f or The Black Angels will be The Black Lips, a band that formed in Dunwoody, Ga., in 1999.

After childhood friends Jared Swilley and Cole Alexander were kicked out of Dunwoody High School for separate, yet equally bad, behavior, the former classmates channeled their love of music and restless energy into their newfound free time. Joined by friends Ben Eberbaugh and Joe Bradley, The Black Lips start- ed playing shows around Atlanta, at house parties and bars.

After honing their sound — garage rock infused with blues, psychedelia and punk — they released “Ain’t Coming Back” in 2002. Shortly before the band was set to head out on its first national tour, Eberbaugh was killed by a drunk driver. Devastated but determined to carry on in Eberbaugh’s honor, The Black Lips hit the road as a trio a few days later.

For 19 years The Black Lips have traveled the country, making a name for themselves as an electrifying, must- see live act. That same mischievous spirit that sped up their exit from the educational system is still very much alive and thriving onstage.
