Two classics at the Tivoli

The comedy about a man who tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts is next up in the Bobby Stone Film Series on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St.

There will be no admission charged to see “The Apartment,” a 1960 romantic comedy that starred Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray.

The story follows C. C. “Bud” Baxter (Lemmon), an insurance clerk who lets senior co-workers use his Upper West Side apartment to conduct extramarital affairs in hopes that it will help him climb the corporate ladder.

Bud is attracted to the elevator operator, Fran Kubelik (MacLaine), who is having an affair with Bud’s boss, Sheldrake (MacMurray).

“The Apartment” won five of the 10 Academy Awards for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director for Billy Wilder, Best Writing, Best Film Editing and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration.

› “Do The Right Thing,” the 1989 film written, produced, directed by and starring Spike Lee, will be screened twice on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Show times are 2 and 6 p.m. at the Tivoli. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 children and senior adults for either show.

Samuel L. Jackson also stars in the movie. “Do the Right Thing” marked the film debut of Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez.

The storyline is set on the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, when the characters’ hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence and tragedy.
