Book launch tonight for Shuptrine, Davis

- STAFF REPORT Compiled by Susan Pierce.

Artist Alan Shuptrine and author Jennifer Pharr Davis will sign their new, limited-edition, coffee-table book during a book launch party tonight, Sept. 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Fairyland Club, 1201 Fleetwood Drive, Lookout Mountain.

“I Come From a Place” is a thematic book that celebrates the beauty and Celtic roots of Appalachia with more than 80 of Shuptrine’s watercolors paired with Davis’ prose. Shuptrine spent more than five years painting the images included in the book, and collaborated with Davis for two years to complete the work. The book is priced at $150.

Davis is a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and an ambassador for the American Hiking Society. Like Shuptrine, who is an avid outdoorsman, she has lived in the Appalachian Mountains all of her life.

History reveals that when 18th-century settlers arrived on eastern shores, they quickly moved inland to these mountains, where the rugged landscape was reminiscent of home. The concept of where one seeks comfort and what provides a sense of home is the premise for “I Come From A Place.”

The artist and author will speak at 6:15 p.m. followed by a book signing at 6:45. Guests can toast the new collaboration with whiskey samples from Chattanooga Whiskey and enjoy bluegrass music and a cash bar.

The book launch is free and open to the public, however reservations are encouraged by calling 423-266-4453.

A second launch party and book signing will be held Friday, Sept. 13, at The Edwin Hotel, 102 Walnut St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be light refreshments and a cash bar in Provisions Coffee Shop. This book launch will also be open to the public.
