Films, com­edy show for the deaf at Bark­ing Legs

Two ad­vo­cacy events are sched­uled in Bark­ing Legs The­ater, 1307 Dodds Ave., tonight and Fri­day, Sept. 19-20.

“Sto­ries Be­yond Borders: Five films to spark ac­tion for im­mi­grant jus­tice” will be shown tonight at 7 o’clock in the the­ater. There is no charge to at­tend the lo­cal pre­sen­ta­tion of this film show­ing pre­sented by Work­ing Films of Wilm­ing­ton, North Carolina.

These five short films de­pict at­tacks on im­mi­grant fam­i­lies and com­mu­ni­ties, such as raids, peo­ple be­ing picked up at court­houses and fam­i­lies sep­a­rated at the borders. In ad­di­tion to build­ing em­pa­thy, these films lift up real sto­ries of re­silience and strength, while il­lus­trat­ing ways peo­ple can give their time, en­ergy and re­sources to sup­port im­mi­grant com­mu­ni­ties.

This event is hosted by La Paz, Ten­nessee Im­mi­grant and Refugee Rights Coali­tion, and Work­ing Films.

Part­ner­ship Ser­vices for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hear­ing will present deaf ac­tress/ comedian Queen Foreverrr on Fri­day night at Bark­ing Legs. Tick­ets to the 8 p.m. show are $15.

Sheena Lyles (aka Queen Foreverrr) grew up in a deaf fam­ily home in Penn­syl­va­nia. Fam­ily mem­bers and good friends en­cour­aged her to steer her ex­ces­sive silli­ness into mak­ing com­edy skits. Lyles has been mak­ing peo­ple laugh ever since.

She has ap­peared at the Deaf Women of Color’s

Con­fer­ence and Na­tional Black Deaf Ad­vo­cacy.

She is also a ver­sa­tile ac­tress, who has ap­peared in the TVOne crime se­ries, “For My Woman & For My Man,” in which she played a lead role as real-life mur­derer Daphne Wright and a sup­port­ing role of Aveance.

Lyles de­scribes her­self as “beau­ti­ful as Queen Lat­i­fah, funny as Jim Car­rey, raw like Les­lie Jones with the comedic timing of Mo’Nique, unique like Tiffany Had­dish, Jewish as Whoopi Goldberg and hop­ing to some­day have money like Ellen.”
