Films, comedy show for the deaf at Barking Legs

Two advocacy events are scheduled in Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave., tonight and Friday, Sept. 19-20.

“Stories Beyond Borders: Five films to spark action for immigrant justice” will be shown tonight at 7 o’clock in the theater. There is no charge to attend the local presentation of this film showing presented by Working Films of Wilmington, North Carolina.

These five short films depict attacks on immigrant families and communities, such as raids, people being picked up at courthouses and families separated at the borders. In addition to building empathy, these films lift up real stories of resilience and strength, while illustrating ways people can give their time, energy and resources to support immigrant communities.

This event is hosted by La Paz, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, and Working Films.

Partnership Services for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing will present deaf actress/ comedian Queen Foreverrr on Friday night at Barking Legs. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show are $15.

Sheena Lyles (aka Queen Foreverrr) grew up in a deaf family home in Pennsylvania. Family members and good friends encouraged her to steer her excessive silliness into making comedy skits. Lyles has been making people laugh ever since.

She is also a versatile actress, who has appeared in the TVOne crime series, “For My Woman & For My Man,” in which she played a lead role as real-life murderer Daphne Wright and a supporting role of Aveance.

Lyles describes herself as “beautiful as Queen Latifah, funny as Jim Carrey, raw like Leslie Jones with the comedic timing of Mo’Nique, unique like Tiffany Haddish, Jewish as Whoopi Goldberg and hoping to someday have money like Ellen.”

This show is for mature audiences only. It will be performed in American sign language only.
