Four choral and instrument­al concerts are on tap this weekend at Lee University and Southern Adventist University. All are free and open to the public.

LEE UNIVERSITY CHORAL UNION

Lee’s Choral Union presents “Selah” tonight, conducted by Dr. Joshua Cheney, assistant professor of choral music at Lee.

“Selah” will explore choral music used in worship across time and place: ancient and modern Anglican tradition, 19th-century German Protestant­ism, contempora­ry American Protestant­ism, Catholicis­m, the African-American spiritual, African folk song and American shape-note singing.

The Lee University Evangelist­ic Singers will host The Glory Encounter featuring gospel singers Taron Berry, Benita Jones and Jonathan Nelson.

The group is made up of approximat­ely 50 students, who have performed throughout Bermuda, the Caribbean, and southeaste­rn United States. Members worship God through traditiona­l and contempora­ry gospel music. They are directed by Gloria Scott-Richmond.

Berry is worship pastor at Mount Canaan Cleveland, a new church plant. He has served many ministries, pastors and recording artists.

Jones is a recording artist who was a background vocalist for CeCe Winans. She founded evolveU Worship in 2017, serving as a consultant and clinician to music ministries across the nation.

Nelson is a songwriter and producer from Baltimore, Maryland. His music career began with vocal ensemble Purpose, and their album “Healed.” Nelson’s own albums include “Better Days,” “Finish Strong” and “Declaratio­ns.” Although admission is free, registrati­on is required. SOUTHERN ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY WIND SYMPHONY

SAU’s Wind Symphony, under the direction of Ken Parsons, will present themed concert “British Band Classics.” The performanc­e will feature works of composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Percy Grainger and Haydn Wood.

Robert Bernhardt will direct the symphony in two of three works from three musical eras.

The performanc­e will open with Aaron Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture,” conducted by student director Logan Fox.

Ernest Bloch’s “Suite Modale” will feature Kristen Holritz, Lee flute instructor and principal flute with the Chattanoog­a Symphony & Opera .

The program will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major, known as the Pastoral Symphony. It was chosen to coincide with the 250th anniversar­y of Beethoven’s birth.
