What happens when you combine comedians with scientists?

You get Stand-Up Science, which will be presented by comedian Shane Mauss and the Here We Are Podcast on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in The Palace Theater, 818 Georgia Ave.

Mauss opens the show with some of his brainiest stand-up comedy followed by three special guests, each of whom will take the stage in turns to make you laugh as much as you learn. After the performances, Mauss and his guests return to the stage for an interactive discussion and Q&A with the audience.

It’s funnier than a TED Talk and smarter than your usual night of comedy.

Mauss has brought his unique blend of absurdist humor and storytelling to cities all over the world. As the creator and host of the podcast Here We Are, he explores his love of science and entertains listeners with his interviews with the world’s leading academic experts about our most fascinating traits, behaviors and finding the funny in the innermost workings of life. Joining Mauss for the Chattanooga show will be Dr. David Ferrier, assistant professor in the Psychology Department at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Dr. Stylianos Chatzimanolis, professor of biology, geology and environmental science at UTC.

Ferrier’s teaching interests include child development, adolescent-into-adulthood development and applied developmental psychology. His research interests include social-emotional development in early childhood, cognitive, emotional and behavioral self-regulation, and student-teacher interactions.

Chatzimanolis’s research includes beetle systematics and Tennessee Valley beetle fauna. He recently started a project to catalogue and identify beetles in the Tennessee Valley region and the Cumberland Plateau.

A surprise comedian will be the show’s third special guest.
