Take a magic carpet ride with Christian Family Theater

- STAFF REPORT

Get ready for a magical ride.

Christian Family Theater will open Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” on Friday, Oct. 25, for three performances this weekend at Brainerd United Methodist Church.

Aladdin, Jasmine and the fast-talking, wisecracking Genie will open a “Whole New World” to their audiences as they discover mystical caves, take magic carpet rides and outwit evil sorcerer Jafar.

Adapted especially for young performers, this musical includes favorite Alan Menken songs such as “Friend Like Me,” “A Whole New World” and “Prince Ali,” as well as new songs added for the Broadway production.

This 70-minute musical is based on the 1992 Disney film and the 2014 Broadway adaptation. The cast includes 38 young actors from around the Chattanooga area, directed by Dale Dye. Musical director is Judy Reich.

“These young actors are just amazing,” says Reich. “They have worked very hard and pushed themselves to produce a great show.”

Particularly exciting for this cast is that Disney

Theatricals, the Disney division that brings these adaptations to Broadway, chose Christian Family

Theater as a stop on its 2019 Magic Lamp Tour. A magic lamp prop from the original production on Broadway is touring the country stopping at a few select “Aladdin Jr.” productions for use in those shows.

“We are so excited about having an actual Broadway prop to use,” says Dye. “We want to share this with our audience not only in the show, but with audience photo-opportunities each evening after the show.”
