Author Cassandra King Conroy speaks tonight at GPS

Cassandra King Conroy, bestselling author and wife of the late Southern writer Pat Conroy, will discuss her memoir, “Tell Me a Story,” tonight, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. in Girls Preparatory School, 205 Island Ave.

The author is the guest of Southern Lit Alliance as part of its South Bound Lecture Series.

“Tell Me a Story” is about her life with Conroy. King was leading a quiet life as a professor, divorced wife of a preacher and debut novelist when she met Conroy. Their friendship bloomed into a long-distance relationship. Their marriage was a union that lasted 18 years, until his death from pancreatic cancer in 2016.

In this poignant, intimate memoir, the woman he called “King Ray” looks back at her love affair with a storyteller whose lust for life was fueled by a passion for literature, food and the South Carolina

Lowcountry that was his home. As she reflects on their relationship, she reveals how she came to understand the convivial, generous, funny and wounded man beneath the legend — her husband, the original Prince of Tides.

She is an award-winning author of books such as “Making Waves,” “Same Sweet Girls,” “Same Sweet Girls’ Guide to Life,” “Moonrise,” “Queen of Broken Hearts” and “The Sunday Wife,” all of which were published under the name Cassandra King.
