String Theory will celebrate Beethoven
String Theory’s final performance of 2019 will feature an encore of two Beethoven piano trios featuring Gloria Chien, piano, Soovin Kim, violin, and Paul Watkins, cello. The concert will take place Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Hunter Museum of American Art.
String Theory was founded in 2009 by Chien with the mission of exposing new audiences to chamber music and cultivating a future generation of music lovers.
The performance will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with the composer’s
“Variations on an Original Theme” in E-flat and “Piano Trio” in B-flat.
Musical Dialogues will take place at 6 p.m. before the concert, featuring in-depth conversations with the artists.
Chien is the co-artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon, as well as the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, Vermont, with her husband, Kim. She is an artist-in-residence at Lee University.
Kim received first prize at the Paganini International Competition, launching his international concert career at age 20. He founded the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival and is co-artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest with Chien. For 20 years, he was first violinist of the Johannes String Quartet.
Watkins is a member of the renowned Emerson String Quartet, and currently serves as artistic director of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Detroit. He is an exclusive recording artist with Chandos Records.
