Arts for Health Lecture taking reservations

- STAFF REPORT Compiled by Susan Pierce.

Reservations are needed for the 20th annual Cam Busch Arts for Health Lecture, which takes place Thursday, March 19, at Hunter Museum of America Art, 10 Bluff View.

Sponsored by CHI Memorial Foundation, the lecture’s purpose is to raise awareness about the Arts for Health program at the hospital.

This year’s featured guest is Virginia Schenck, known by the stage name VA. An international vocal artist and jazz performer, she has studied under the legendary Bobby McFerrin.

She has worked as a board-certified music therapist, primarily in the fields of psychology and addiction, gerontology and cancer wellness. She has also worked with patients with autism and learning disabilities, and was a pioneer in the early application of music therapy for music therapy-assisted childbirth and hospice care.

When not performing, she teaches continuing education for music therapists in addition to leading her own retreats and workshops.

In addition to the speaker, Thursday’s program will feature local visual and performing arts organizations that are making an impact on community health in areas of social, emotional and physical wellness.

Schenck will also lead a master class at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, hosted by the UTC music therapy program. This class is open to all high school and college students in the region. It will be held in the UTC University Center auditorium on Thursday, March 19, at 10 a.m.
