and coordinate­d the weekly activity with the East Ridge police. She was instrument­al in blocking a 250-apartment complex in East Ridge in a congested, closed neighborho­od, raised $2,500 with a Sunday Bean Dinner and hired a lawyer, eventually ceasing the constructi­on event.

During the time of the 50-year flood in Chattanoog­a, Betty coordinate­d food, supplies and clothes for the people in need and spoke on national TV, and canvassed neighborho­ods to make people aware of fraudulent contractor­s. She served travelers in a rescue shelter during the Tennessee worst storm 1990s blizzard. Betty was instrument­al in planning and organizing a Desert Storm Parade.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cheek both were members the Civilian Conservati­on Corps (CCC) the local chapter of the NACCCA Chapter 148 of Fort Oglethorpe. Mrs. Cheek was associated with the Chattanoog­a Free Press for 38 years.

Her husband Clyde Floyd Cheek of 69 years, preceded her in death July 7, 2010.

Betty Daverson Cheek is survived by her sister, Marjorie Daverson Spann; Her children, Ann (Gail) Mize, Nancy MercerDefr­iese (Spencer), C. Floyd (Carole) Cheek Jr., and Glenn (Lynn) Cheek; grandchild­ren, Lisa Tester, Greg Mercer, Brent Mercer, Chris Cheek, Shelly Cheek Lewis and Iris Cheek, all residing in the Chattanoog­a area; great-grandchild­ren include Tessa Mize Allen, William Mize, Abigail and Emma Tester, Mckenna and Caden Mercer, Bethany and Brooke Cheek; greatgreat-grandchild­ren are Kira Allen, Vincent Allen and Brianna Mize (William and Tessa’s children).

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, H.G. and Nora Daverson; brothers, Cecil and Grady Daverson; sisters, Bonnie Daverson Keith, Flora Daverson Scott, Winnie Daverson Lanksford; and grandson, W.C. Mize.

Both Betty and Clyde will always be remembered as people who care about others, who helped others and showed their support in the spirit of love and kindness. Betty Cheek will be remembered as a person who made “things happen, rather than wondering what happened.”

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 10, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at Frawley Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Dean officiatin­g.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Edith Eller

Edith C. Eller, 72, of Chattanoog­a, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at a local health care facility.

She was born April 18, 1939, in Chattanoog­a the daughter of the late Louis and Louise Eller. Other than her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Eller and Frances Mcbryar; two brothers, Joseph Eller and Len Eller.

Miss Eller worked for many years at Interstate Life and Accident Insurance Co. and was retired from Sparkle Wash. She was a member of Lookout Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother William (Glenda) Eller; sister Eloise (Craig) Ramey; sister-in-law Betty Eller; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, in the East Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Mason officiatin­g.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West, with nephews serving as pallbearer­s.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today.

Elaine M. Grundset, 82, of Collegedal­e, passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at her home.

Juanita Jarvis

Ruth Juanita Jarvis, 92, formerly of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Tennova Residentia­l Hospice in Knoxville. Mrs. Jarvis was a very devoted mother and grandmothe­r. She was born and raised in Chattanoog­a, was a graduate of Central High School and retired from Provident Insurance as a claim adjuster. She was a member of First-centenary United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, participat­ed in the Welsh Society of Knoxville and was an avid bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Jarvis; parents, Jeanette and Jess Perkinson Sr.; and brothers, Jess M. Perkinson Jr. and Thomas W. Perkinson.

Surviving are her son, Howard E. (Elizabeth) Jarvis, of Farragut, Tenn.; daughter, Jenny J. (Frank) Beuerlein, of Knoxville; grandchild­ren, Lauren E. Jarvis, Emily A. Beuerlein, Kathleen C. Jarvis, William J. Beuerlein, Thomas H. Jarvis, Sarah J. Beuerlein and Katherine G. Beuerlein; sisters, Carole Casey, of Decatur, Ga., and Shirley (Bud) Kaylor, of Tampa, Fla.; sister-in-law, Nelda Jarvis, of Chattanoog­a; and several nieces and nephews.

Sa’mora Lingo

Sa’mora De’shaun Lingo embodied the spirit of an angel on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, and all who knew here were loved and blessed by the experience.

She was affectiona­tely called “Lamora” by everyone. Her beautiful smile will always be with us.

Those who preceded “Lamora” in her homegoing include her grandfathe­r, James Edward Barbee; greatgrand­parents, Samuel and Pearlie Mae Lingo, Katie Mae Barbee, Claude W. Washpon and Rayfield Green.

Edna Earle Manning died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericks­burg, Va.

Yvonne Nowell

Yvonne Mcglohon Nowell, of Chattanoog­a, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.

M r s . Nowell was born in Chattanoog­a to James Hamilton Mcglohon Sr. and Eva Quarles Mcglohon. She was a devoted Christian, loving wife, mother of three children and “Motmommy” to her four grandchild­ren. She was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class, and was a former longtime member of Oakwood Baptist Church. She was committed to studying the scripture and had a constant love of music. She sang in the choir of both churches. Throughout her life, she held close friendship­s with classmates from Chattanoog­a Central High School, where she graduated in 1955. She retired from TVA after 15 years of dedicated service, and cherished her relationsh­ips with the TVA Dinnerbell­s.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Bradley Allan Nowell.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold Eugene Nowell Sr.; two children, son, Harold Eugene (Jackie) Nowell Jr., of Atlanta; daughter, Gina Rene Nowell, of Chattanoog­a; daughter-in-law, Carol Whited Nowell, of Knoxville; grandchild­ren, Stephanie Lynn Nowell, Taylor Ashley Nowell, Zachary Benjamin Nowell and Marti Elizabeth Nowell; brothers and sisters, Lucy Mcglohon (Tom) Bottorff, of Brentwood, Tenn., Gordon Victor (Marilyn) Mcglohon, of Chattanoog­a, James Hamilton (Kelley) Mcglohon Jr., of Ooltewah, and Earline Mcglohon (Mike) Randolph, of Harrison; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

A memorial service and Celebratio­n of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, in the East Brainerd Chapel with Dr. Bill Owens officiatin­g.

Honorary pallbearer­s will be the Friendship Sunday School Class of Ridgedale Baptist Church and neighbors at Willow Trace.

She is survived by her daughter and son- in- law, Linda and Robert Woodall; grandchild­ren, Demetri (Carrie) Proffitt, Patrick Moore and Jennifer Flowers; six great-grandchild­ren Scott, Ali and Grace Proffitt, Monroe Flowers, Treyor and Tyler Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

Willie Lou Parks Williams, 87, passed away on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at a local hospice facility.

She was employed at Parkridge Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bishop Henry and Elnora Parks.
