Capt. Watson and the Sea Shepherd return to Japanese waters as “Whale Wars” (9 p. m., Animal Planet, TVPG) enters a new season.

Animal Planet also launches the new series “Louisiana Lockdown” ( 10 p. m . ) . Louisiana’s Angola prison, one of the nation’s largest maximum-security facilities, is home to more than 5,000 inmates.

Most are serving life sentences and will never leave its walls.

“Lockdown” focuses on prison programs that allow prisoners to interact with animals — from herding cattle and raising bloodhounds to breaking and training wild horses.

Some prisoners also participate in Angola’s legendary annual rodeo that allows the incarcerated the “freedom” to ride a bucking bronco, if only for fleeting seconds a year.

TASTE OF THE BRONX

If you’re ready for a taste of the Bronx, sample “The Culinary Adventures of Baron Ambrosia” ( 10 p. m., Cooking Channel).

A minor celebrity and self- described culinary ambassador to the Bronx, Ambrosia has a popular podcast and has directed two films. He turns every “Adventure” into a treasure hunt for special ingredients and local lore.

First up: After discovering a map hidden in a haunted carousel, Baron travels to Bridgeport, Conn., home to P.T. Barnum, and samples culinary specialties of that city’s immigrants, including Peruvian ceviche, Haitian oxtail and Jamaican jerk chicken.

Not in the mood for the Bronx? How about Detroit? “Motor City Rising” (10 p.m., Ovation) profiles artists and activists dedicated to making their mark while trying to help the embattled Michigan city regain its reputation as a center of industry, opportunity and creativity.
