Tar Heels roll past Blue Raiders 40-20

- Wire & Staff Reports

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Romar Morris scored twice to help North Carolina run out to a big lead and beat Middle Tennessee 40-20 in college football Saturday.

Bryn Renner threw for 339 yards and a touchdown for the Tar Heels (1-1), who led all day to regroup after a loss at highly regarded South Carolina. North Carolina scored the first 23 points, had 511 yards and never let the Blue Raiders (1-1) get closer than 13 points after halftime.

Jordan Parker ran for a touchdown and Jared Singletary returned a fumble for a score early in the fourth quarter that brought Middle Tennessee to within 26-13. But the Blue Raiders committed four turnovers, had their offense go dormant in the first half and struggled to consistently slow the Tar Heels’ no-huddle spread offense.

Renner passed to Quinshad Davis for an 18-yard touchdown shortly after Singletary’s return to retake momentum, helping UNC win its third straight home opener.

MTSU quarterback Logan Kilgore, who started despite a shoulder injury suffered last week against Western Carolina, threw three interceptions. The first came in the end zone on a one- handed grab by UNC’s Tre Boston on an opening drive that had pushed all the way to the 1-yard line.

Tennessee St. 27, Florida A&M 7 At Tallahasse, Fla., Tim Broughton rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown to give the Tigers their first win of the season.

Telvin Hooks ran 12 times for 77 yards and a TD, and TSU freshman quarterback Ronald Butler was 14-of-21 passing for 131 yards.

The Tennessee State defense harassed the Rattlers all day, holding them to 156 yards of offense, forcing two turnovers and allowing only 2 of 12 third- down conversions. Tigers safety David Van Dyke intercepted a Damien Fleming pass on the first possession of the game and returned the ball 46 yards for a touchdown.

No. 21 Wisconsin 48, Tennessee Tech 0

At Madison, Wis., Melvin Gordon ran for 140 yards and a score, and No. 21 Wisconsin’s overpowering defense got its second straight shutout win over FCS school Tennessee Tech.

Boise State 63, UT-Martin 14 At Boise, Idaho, Joe Southwick threw five touchdown passes as the Broncos pounded the Ohio Valley Conference team.

Boise State (1-1) rebounded from its worst defeat in eight years, a 38- 6 loss at Washington last week that knocked it from the Top 25. UT- Martin fell to 1-15 against FBS programs in its history, beating Memphis last season.

Duke 28, Memphis 14 At Memphis, Brandon Connette, subbing for injured starter Anthony Boone, threw for 198 yards and two fourth- quarter touchdowns as the Blue Devils doubled up the Tigers.

This the first time since 1998 that Duke has opened the season 2- 0. Connette was 14-of-21 after entering in the second quarter when Boone left the game with an injury to his right side. He didn’t return.

Connette broke open a 14- all tie with touchdown passes of 22 yards to Issac Blakeney and 12 yards to Brandon Braxton in the final frame.

Sewanee 10, DePauw 7 At Sewanee, former Ooltewah High School kicker Callum Wishart was the difference in the seasonopening win for the host Tigers, who led 10-0 at halftime on a 1-yard run by quarterback Curtis Johnson and Wishart’s point- after kick and 25-yard field goal, the latter ending an 11-play possession with six seconds to go in the second quarter.

The TD drive covered 85 yards with seven plays. Armani Cato scored on a 3-yard run capping a 45-yard drive for DePauw in the first minute of the fourth quarter.

Johnson was 4- for- 4 passing for 60 yards and ran 12 times for 27, while Andrew Keenan led nine Sewanee runners with 39 yards on eight carries. Stephen Jackson had a 53-yard catch, and Quentin Jones had seven solo tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception. Dave McKeithen made five solo stops and added three assists, and De’Nard also totaled seven stops and picked off a pass.
