Plenty for film buffs at Monday’s Backlot meeting

- STAFF REPORT

This month’s meeting of The Backlot: A Place for Filmmakers will be busy Monday, April 20, with a cinematographer, a casting call and the screening of an award-winning short film on the docket.

The main event is a presentation by David George, who was director of photography for the recent feature film “Old Fashioned.” You may remember the romantic drama as the PG-13 alternative to “50 Shades of Grey,” released the same weekend.

Professor George heads the film program at Southern Adventist University and is a veteran of features and shorts. He will be talking about best practices in film production, his experiences on the set over the past 10 years and the growing professional film program at Southern.

The casting call is for Jack Gray’s “Shock Theatre.” The role requires an experienced actress, preferably with comedic ad lib skills, a “classic model physique,” knowledge of horror films and the ability to speak with “news anchor accuracy” on-camera. In addition to the filming schedule, the position requires participation in promotional and charity events.

The screening is the Backlot premiere of “Chasing Sunsets,” which swept the awards at the recent 54 Film Fest during Con Nooga. The short by the Video Club of Soddy-Daisy High School, led by Christopher Holbrook, won nine trophies in the competition, including the Audience Award for Best Film. It will be shown just before George’s presentation.

The evening begins with a meet-and-greet at 6:30 p.m. and the programs following at 7 p.m. at Heritage House, 1428 Jenkins Road. Admission is free, but participants are encouraged to bring a covered dish, side, dessert or nonalcoholic beverage to share.

Business cards, head shots and resumes are also helpful for those wishing to connect with others in the business.
