Prayer Breakfast expects crowd of about 1,700

-

In 1978, I was privileged to attend the very first Chattanooga Area Prayer Breakfast. It was Ted DeMoss who, along with other community leaders, organized the event. There were 1,500 men and women present, and Chuck Colson, who had just been released from prison for the Nixon affair, was the speaker. It was a neverto- be- forgotten event.

This year’s 37th breakfast will be held on Tuesday, May 5, at the Chattanooga Convention Center beginning at 7 a. m. The Prayer Breakfast is one of the oldest and most successful of our national events, and attendance each year has been between 1,500 to 1,700. The speaker this year is Brig Sorbet, CEO of Two Men and a Truck International.

I’m convinced that the Area Prayer Breakfast and Bible in the Schools are two reasons that Chattanooga is consistently listed by the America Bible Society as one of the 10 most Bible- minded cities in the United States. The other cities are: Birmingham, Ala.; Shreveport, La.; Tri- Cities area, Tenn.; Lynchburg, Va.; Springfield, Mo.; Jackson, Miss.; Charlotte, N.C.; Greenville, S. C.; Spartanburg, S. C.; Asheville, N.C.; and Little Rock, Ark. For those of you who are wondering about Knoxville, it’s at No. 11.

Tickets for the prayer breakfast are $ 20 for a single ticket or $ 160 for a table of eight. Orders should be sent by April 28 to Jackson Wingfield, Wingf ield Scale Co., 2205 Holtzclaw Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404. Tickets are also available online for $ 21 each using PayPal at chattanoogaprayerbreakfast.org.

The purpose of the breakfast is to encourage morality and ethics in the lives of all people in positions of leadership in business, government and other professions. Attendance this year is expected to top 1,700, the highest thus far.

There will be free parking at the Finley Stadium lots. Free shuttle buses will depart from Finley to the convention center every five minutes, beginning at 6: 15 a. m.
