Charlotte Burns

Dolly Charlotte Burns, 72, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015, at her home. Mrs. Burns was a graduate of Central High School and the Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing. She worked at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital and retired from Erlanger Hospital. She was a member of the former East Ridge Baptist Church over 50 years, and a current member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Ooltewah. She was a member of the Chattanoog­a Doll Club and the Chattanoog­a Rose Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Edward Wofford and Dolly Louise Wofford and her brother, Charles Gordon Wofford.

Survivors include her husband, Robert R. Burns; son, Jeff Burns; grandson John Ross Burns, of Harrison; daughter, Pam Abernathy (Billy), of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; sister-in-law, Pam Wofford, of Navarre, Fla.; nephew, Eddie Wofford (Dyan); grand-niece, Willow Wofford, of Ramstein, Germany; niece, Brenda Wofford, of Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Steele officiatin­g.

Suzette Carlisle, 46, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015, at her residence.

Brian Lee Daugherty, 49, a longtime resident of Chattanoog­a died on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at a local health care facility.

He graduated from Tyner High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a. He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Heirs of Truth Sunday School Class. He was a network administra­tor for Wilkins Research of Chattanoog­a.

He was the son of the late Erv Daugherty, and is survived by son, Devin Daugherty of Chattanoog­a; mother, Pauline Daugherty of Chattanoog­a; two sisters, Cheri (Tracy) Stakely, of Columbia, S.C., and Michelle (Kevin) Mathews of Ooltewah; several nieces and nephews.

A celebratio­n of life service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at 3 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home with Dr. Doug Plumlee and Dr. Bill Owens officiatin­g. The Heirs of Truth Sunday School Class at Ridgedale Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearer­s.

William Dorrell, 83, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015, in a local hospital.

David Drinkard

Gaylord David Drinkard was a wonderful husband and soulmate to Polly and a best friend and father to many until his passing on Thursday, May 14, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Sept. 26, 1944, on a small farm in Decatur, Ala., the son of David S. and Marguerite Suite Drinkard.

He attended San Pasqual High School in Winter Haven, California. He joined the United States Naval Forces and served in the “Vietnam War.” He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a Boilermake­r and CWI Inspector until the day he retired.

He was married to the love of his life, Polly Logan, 31 years ago; it was this union that brought life and love back into the lives of Polly and her two children, Janice Kay and Joy Lynn. David and Polly relocated to Chattanoog­a, in 1987. David always said, “What’s the use of living if you can’t be happy,” and he spent his life making others happy.

Surviving are his wife, Polly; his children Joy, Janice and son- in- law, Tommy; nine grandchild­ren and six great- grandchild­ren. David leaves a sister, Phyllis (Thaddis); brother, Richard (Cinda) and best friends, Mary Queen and Paul Fitzsimmon­s.

He was preceded in death by his parents David and Marguerite Drinkard.

He will always be remembered for his kind smile and sweet personalit­y; he was truly a beautiful person who lived to love and please his family.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015, at the East Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home with Brother James Julian and Pastor Steve Ball officiatin­g.

Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with grandsons serving as pallbearer­s.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-6 p.m. Sunday and from noon-2 p.m. Monday.

Bruce Dunn

Bruce Hamilton Dunn, 79, St. Petersburg, Fla., ( formerly of Talladega, Ala., and Carthage, Tenn .) , passed away on May 10, 2015, after a battle with cancer.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mayme Dunn; son, James L. Dunn; brother, John W. Dunn; and sister, Edith Bartels.

Bruce is survived by the mother of his children and friend to the end, JoAnn W. Dunn, of Bradenton, Fla.; son, Bruce F. Dunn, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughter and sonin-law, Cindy and Paul Lyons, of Flowery Branch, Ga.; granddaugh­ter, Rachel Lyons (nicknamed Duly by her Papa) and sister, Sue LaBlanc.

Bruce was given the nickname of “Dead Eye Dunn” when he played basketball in high school. He served in the military, worked with many charities and was a Mason with the Shriners. Bruce retired from the Corp of Engineers and headed south to pursue his love for sailing. Although when FEMA called, he wouldn’t pass a chance to go back out in the field. There was never a stranger he met nor a story he couldn’t tell.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Ooltewah Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the funeral home.

Vera Fryar

Vera Mae Fryar, 87, of Chattanoog­a passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015.

She was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Etowah , Tenn., to the late William D. and Alice Haralson.

She taught school for many years at John A. Patten and Margaret Wilson Schools. Following her retirement she ministered as a Bible teacher for the Inner City Ministries. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher at Lookout Valley Presbyteri­an Church and was currently a member of Mountain View Presbyteri­an Church.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmothe­r, great- grandmothe­r and a friend to many people.

Her husband, Joseph Bryan Fryar Sr.; one sister, Henrietta Golde; and one brother, Ted Haralson preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Joe B. Fryar Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Hixson; daughter, Nancy Fryar Hale, of Chattanoog­a; grandchild­ren, Bryan Fryar III and his wife, Jennifer, of Chattanoog­a; Allison Caudle and her husband Darin, of Virginia; Emily Alexander and her husband Scott, of Chattanoog­a; Matt Hale and his wife, Heather, of Chattanoog­a; great-grandchild­ren, Joey, IV, Blake, Thomas, Lauren, Peyton, Emma Mae, and Abigail; one sister, Katherine Haralson, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ernest Gilliam

Ernest P. Gilliam, 77, of Rossville, Ga., died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Gilliam was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad after 30 years of service and was a member of the American Legion Post 95 and the Brotherhoo­d of Locomotive Engineers.

He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Korea and was preceded in death by his first wife, Faye Gilliam; daughter, Donna Lynn Gilliam; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors are his wife, Jolie Brock Gilliam; daughter, Patty (Mike) Jenkins, Ringgold, Ga.; son, Ronnie (Cindy) Gilliam, Ooltewah; six grandchild­ren, Casi Browder, Josh ( Sarah) Gilliam, Brittney (Matt) Gann, Lee ( Sarah) Gilliam, Lauren Jenkins and Josh (Laura Lee) Jenkins; five great-grandchild­ren, Madison Jenkins, Cole Browder, Macie Bates, Maddox Gilliam and Owen Gann.

Farrell Hale

Farrell Elaine Chase Hale, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on May 13, 2015. Farrell was born on Aug. 8, 1935, in LaGrange, Ga. She grew up in Oak Ridge, Tenn., b ut wa s a lifelong resident of Chattanoog­a. Farrell was known by her family as Mama, and Granny Farrell. Her many loves were her family, pets and fishing at the lake.

Farrell was a social worker for the State of Georgia and retired in 1999. She was a member of the Mountain Creek Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Loma and Irvin Chase; brothers, Chadwick Chase, of Chattanoog­a and Darrell Chase, of Chattanoog­a; and sister, Mary Chase Morgan, of Charlotte, N.C.

Survivors include her two daughters, Lynn Anderson (John), Jennifer Crowell (Barry), both of Signal Mountain; two sons, Kenneth Hale (Theresa), and Jeff Hale, both of Hixson.

Grandchild­ren: Keith Hale, Jena Hale, Chris Land (Dawn), Jason Land (Wendy) and Dr. Lacy Windham (Eric).

Florence Isabell Greer Henley, 88, died Friday, May 15, 2015, at her home.

She was born in Bledsoe County, Tenn., but was a Chattanoog­a resident for 70 years. She graduated from Bledsoe County High School in 1944. She worked at Buster Brown Hosiery Mill for 20 years, but retired as a seamstress from Signal Knitting Mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Henley; her parents, Alton C. and Flora Mae Thomas Greer; siblings, Knox Greer, Oliver Maxwell Greer, Nerine Griffith, William Alvin Greer, Ruth Maureen Barger and Albert Curtis Greer

Helen Louise Terry, 65, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanoog­a area and attended Rossville Church of Christ. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmothe­r who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Derwood Dunwoody and Nancy Brummitt Dunwoody and one sister.

Alta Jean Green Weir, 85, of Chattanoog­a, went home to be with her Savior on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

She is survived by her daughter and sonin-law, Susan and Je f f Chaffin; her granddaugh­ters, Bethany Chaffin and Amanda Chaffin Carleo, (Duane); her brother, Ben Green (Linda); sisters, Frieda Wieck (Keith), Ruth Henderson ( Bill) and Brenda Green Lund ( Pete); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Colville Conner Weir; her son, Robert Carl Weir; her parents, William O and Edith Sparks Green; and her brothers, Paul (Barbara), Robert Thomas, and Billy Vann Green,; nephew Brian Green, as well as many aunts and uncles.

Jean was born in Dayton, Tenn., and was a graduate of Rhea Central High School and Bryan College. She was proud to be a retired school teacher, having taught at Russell Brown Elementary School, Rhea County High School, Brainerd High School and Red Bank High School. She was a devoted member of Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson.

William Baker

McMINNVILL­E — William Hardin Baker, 83, died May 12, 2015.

Native of Spencer, Tenn., he was retired as fire chief of McMinnvill­e Fire Department in a career as a fireman that span over 40 years. Member of Spencer First Baptist Church, veteran of U.S. Army during Korean War, and was preceded in death by parents, Clyde and Edith Baker; wife, Frances Rhea Baker, and an infant sister.

Survivors children, Sandra (Robert) Adams and Joe (Kelly) Baker; grandchild­ren, Garrett Adams, Brenna Adams, Jathan Baker and Kloey Baker; sisters, Evelyn (George) Logan and Clydene (Bob) Rosenthal; and brothers, Robert (Phyllis) Baker and Edwin (Barbara) Baker; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and H.B. Mary Dolores Hyman Davis “Dody,” born in Baltimore Md., on Aug. 20, 1934.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Joseph Hyman and Mary Virginia Waggoner Hyman; sons, Philip Burns Davis and Alphonse Henry Davis Jr.

Imogene was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and a member of the Dayton Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Georgia Simpson Reed; a daughter, Patricia Frisk; a son, Ricky Harris; a stepson, Bobby Clowdfus; and a sister, Shirley Johnson.

JASPER — Mack Leathers, 63, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at his home.

Mack was a loving family man. He was a member of the Jasper Church of the Nazarene, worked for Sowder Electric Company in Jasper for 16 1/2 years and had worked for several years as a self-employed general contractor in Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Dolly Leathers; six brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Leathers, of Jasper; five children; ten grandchild­ren; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. CDT on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at the Jasper Church of the Nazarene with Brother Lynn Casseday and Brother Bill Ross officiatin­g.

DAYTON — Faye Smith Riggs, 79, died May 13, 2015, at her residence.

Faye was a resident of Rhea County, She was born at Rhea Springs the daughter of Willie Houston and Minnie Jane Miller Smith on July 31. She was the granddaugh­ter of Jason and Melissa Morgan Miller and John H. Smith and Martha Turner Smith. She worked at Kayser Roth for over 20 years. She also worked at Lays 5 & Dime.

Preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, George Riggs; her parents; sisters, Virgie Malone, Ruby Fugate and JoAnn Smith; brothers, Hubert, John Lester Smith, Dexter Smith and Paul Smith; brothers-in-law, Clifford Malone, Charlie Fugate and Bill Ellis, Joe Greenway and Floyd Holly; sisters-in-law, Jean Monday Smith, Mary Smith, Cynthia Greenway, Fannie Riggs and May Lois Holly. Several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Survivors include sons, Charles, Kenny and Dean Riggs, all of Dayton; daughter, Teresa Hulgan, of Dayton; her adopted children who she loved just like they were her own, Patricia Maines-Riggs, Peggy Riggs and Bob Hulgan, all of Dayton; sister, Iva Ellis; and sister-in-law, Rita Green Smith, both of Dayton; grandchild­ren, Derrick (Bobby King) Hale, Brittani Hale, Tori Hale and Michalea Hale, Rob (Shauntelle) Hulgan, Tim Riggs, Bret, Jacob and Nick Riggs, all of Dayton, Janet ( Houston) Edgeman, of Rossville, Beverly (Jason) Lynn, of Rockwood and Emerald (Jason) Gandee, of Ohio; great-grandchild­ren, Braydon Riggs-Kite, Keydon Hawkins, Ansley, Bella King and Lilly and Amelia Hale, Paisley Hale, Issac, Eric, Clayton and Cody Edgeman. PALMER — Dan Jack Sissom, 76, passed away Thursday May 14, 2015, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanoog­a.

He was a carpenter, member and past master of the Sewanee Lodge #405 F&AM at Tracy City and of the Methodist faith. He was born in Palmer, Tenn., on Dec. 24, 1938, to Pascal and Mildred Byers Sissom who preceded him in death along with his sister, Jessie Ruth Hartwell; brothers, Pascal Jr., Brian and Glen Sissom.

LaFAYETTE — Wirt H. “Joe” Gordon, 89, assed away Tuesday, May 12, 2015, in a local healthcare facility.

He was retired from Smith Transfer Trucking and held membership­s at Woodstatio­n Baptist Church, Tompkins Masonic Lodge #466, Eastern Star, Alhambra Shrine, Scottish Rites and Oddfellows and he was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II. His love of his church and his family will always be remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Fannie Gordon, four brothers, Robert, Edward, Oscar and Jay Gordon and sister, Ethel Cordell.

RINGGOLD — Betty S. Griffin, age 84, beloved wife of H. Douglas Griffin, went to meet her Savior on Tuesday May 12, 2015. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Born on May 22, 1930, she was a native of Bledsoe County, Tenn., and was the daughter of the late W. J. and Dixie Martin Sapp.

Betty was an English teacher at Tennessee Temple University for 18 years and a former missionary with Trans World Radio (TWR), where she was responsibl­e for communicat­ing with the Spanish listeners. While with TWR Betty and Doug served in Tangier, Morocco; Nice, France; CuraÁao/Bonaire, Netherland­s Antilles; and Boca Raton, Fla. For 45 years she faithfully taught Sunday School, the majority of that time in a ladies class at Highland Park Baptist Church.

Betty is survived by her husband of 63 years, H. Douglas Griffin, one sister, Joanne Sapp (Randall) Turner, and three sisters-in-law: Irene, Marie, and Debbie, all of Bledsoe County, Tenn. She is also survived by her four children: Dixie A. (Douglas) Mathews of Acworth, Ga.; Stephen H. (Glory) Griffin of Watkinsvil­le, Ga.; Jon D. (Alayne) Griffin and Naomi G. (Eric) Self, both of Ringgold, Ga., her 11 grandchild­ren: David (Ashley) Mathews, Michael Griffin, LeeAnn Mathews, Jana Griffin, Elisabeth Mathews, Bethany (Jamie) Sexton, Alyssa Griffin, Daniel Mathews, Lucy Self, Sophie Self, and Griffin Self, and one great-grandson, Lukas Mathews.

The funeral service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefiel­d Parkway at 2 p.m. (EDT) today, May 16, 2015, with Doyle Ashburn and David Winget officiatin­g.

FLINTSTONE — James Alwyn Ketner, 83, passed away Thursday May 14, 2015, at his home.

Mr. Ketner was a life long resident of the North Georgia area and was retired from DuPont after more than 30 years of service. James was a member of the Chattanoog­a Valley Church of Christ where he was an elder for more than 40 years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean War.

He was a son of the late, Eric and Mary Little Ketner; and was preceded in death by his brothers, Jackie and Freddie Ketner; and sister, Johnnie Tutton.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Helen Hickman Ketner; sons, James Lebron (Jackie) Ketner, Flintstone and Daleth Lynn (Tammy) Ketner, Ringgold; sister, Darlene Ketner (Aubrey) Bradford, Rossville; granddaugh­ter, Jessica Ketner (Jon) Brenneman, along with several nieces and nephews.
