‘Body of Christ’ found in Sunday school class
It was 10 years ago that I spoke one Monday evening to the Positive Christian Singles at my church. They were a friendly, lively group, many of whom I knew personally. A small group of officers asked me to talk to them after the meeting.
I agreed but was totally surprised by the request they made once they got me alone. They told me about the Sunday school classes in our church for singles under 35 years of age. Then they added: “Unfortunately, there is only one for those of us over 35. We’d like you to start one.”
Though I was grateful for their vote of confidence, I explained there was no way I could accept their invitation.
First, my husband and I were spending most of our time traveling and speaking on behalf of our denomination’s Board of Discipleship in Nashville. Secondly, I was writing some curriculum for the same board. I couldn’t take on another assignment.
But, through a circuitous route, I finally agreed to help launch a Sunday school class for those over 35 and also to be one of the teachers. By that time, I saw the tremendous potential in the group. They were attractive and talented people who were ready to roll. It has been a decade of excitement and growth and a great willingness for most members to do their part. Today, we are a well-structured class with lessons that are biblically based but life-oriented. In addition, we sing songs, have refreshments and share our joys and prayer concerns. At the end of class, we circle the room and hold hands for a closing prayer.
For me, the class has been the “Body of Christ.” In late May I had a fall that hasn’t allowed me to drive for a while. The class organized transportation for as long as it takes and provided teachers when I must be absent. They have done this with love and encouragement, reminding me of the original disciples.
I feel like saying to them what St. Paul said to the Philippians: “I thank my God in every remembrance of you” (Philippians 1:3).
