Security high for memorial at McKenzie

The White House said Friday that Vice President Joe Biden will speak at 2: 45 p.m. today at McKenzie Arena during the memorial service for the five military members killed in the July 16 military attacks.

Other well-known participants include Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Gov. Bill Haslam and Mayor Andy Berke.

Doors open at 11 a.m. at McKenzie Arena for the service, which is scheduled for 2- 4 p. m. The arena’s doors will be closed at 1:30 p.m., or whenever the 8,500 seats available to the public are filled. People should expect airport- type security measures, according to a release from the Chattanooga mayor’s office, and be prepared for longer-than-usual lines because of heightened security.

Personal cameras and video cameras will be allowed. But bags are “strongly discouraged,” the release said. Security will thoroughly search each item by hand.

“Please do not bring any items you would not bring onto an airplane,” the release said. “You will be asked to either return them to your car or to dispose of them.”

The parking lots around McKenzie Arena will be closed to the public. Patrons can park at other lots around the UTC campus, the release said.

There will also be a free shuttle between the arena and the Engel Stadium parking lot, about a mile east of McKenzie Arena. The first shuttle is at 10 a.m. and the last one leaves Engel Stadium at 1:20 p.m.

The public should enter the arena through Gate 1, on Mabel Street, and Gate 3, on East Fourth Street. Gate 2, on Houston Street, is for active military and people who need assistance.

There will be some road closures around the arena. Mabel Street will be closed from East Fourth Street to Douglas and Fifth Street. East Fourth Street will be closed from Mabel Street to Houston Street.

Houston Street from Vine Street to Fourth Street will be open only to people with parking passes and shuttle buses.
