Dixon leads Louisiana Tech to 27-17 win over FIU
RUSTON, La. — Kenneth Dixon rushed for two touchdowns and hauled in a pass for another to lead Louisiana Tech to a 27-17 win over Florida International on Saturday.
This was Dixon’s 11th career game with three or more touchdowns, tying the NCAA record held by Montee Ball. Dixon has 20 games with 100 yards or more rushing in his career.
Dixon, who finished with 169 rushing yards, broke for a 63-yard touchdown run on Tech’s first possession and grabbed a 23-yard scoring strike from Jeff Driskel with 8:13 left in the first half. Jonathan Barnes booted a 39yard field goal to give the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1 Conference USA) a 17-3 lead at the break.
Dixon added a 14-yard scoring run and Barnes kicked a 28-yard field goal in the fourth for a 27-10 lead with 6:36 remaining.
Alex McGough threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns for Florida International (2-2, 0-1).
Appalachian State 49, Old
Dominion 0: Taylor Lamb threw a career-high four touchdown passes to lead Appalachian State to a 49-0 win over Old Dominion.
Lamb completed 11 of 15 passes for 187 yards and spread the ball around, sending TD throws to four different receivers, including a 53-yarder to Bobo Beathard. Marcus Cox, who hauled in another of the scoring throws, rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries, piercing the century mark for the sixth-straight game.
Terrence Upshaw put the Mountaineers (2-1) on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Devan Stringer recovered a fumble by Old Dominion’s Shuler Bentley and returned it 77 yards for a score. Also pulling down touchdown catches were Shaedon Meadors and Hunter Nunn. Jalin Moore ran in the final score from the 22.
Bentley passed for 133 yards and two interceptions for Old Dominion (2-2), which was held to just 175 total yards.
Western Kentucky 56, Miami
(Ohio) 14: Senior quarterback Brandon Doughty threw for 457 yards and six touchdowns — five in the first half — as Western Kentucky rolled over Miami (Ohio) 56-14.
Doughty, who passed for 381 yards in the first half, had touchdown passes of nine, three, five, four and 59 yards over the first two quarters as WKU built a 49-7 halftime lead.
The 49 points were the most the Hilltoppers (3-1) had scored in a half since scoring 52 in the first half against West Virginia Tech on Sept. 8, 2007.
Western Kentucky junior wide receiver Taywan Taylor made nine catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jared Dangerfield hauled in 11 passes for 148 yards and a score.
Quarterbacks Drew Kummer and Gus Ragland each threw touchdown passes for the RedHawks (1-3).
Florida Atlantic 17, Charlotte
7: Ocie Rose scored on a 60-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter to help Florida Atlantic beat Charlotte 17-7.
Rose and Cre’von LeBlanc finished with two interceptions apiece. Sharrod Neasman and Jalen Young also had interceptions for Florida Atlantic (1-3, 1-0 Conference USA).
Jaquez Johnson ran for a 14-yard touchdown, and Greg Joseph kicked a 45-yard field goal to give the Owls a 10-0 halftime lead. Johnson was 14 of 25 with 144 yards passing with two interceptions.
Tank Norman picked off a Johnson pass and returned it 28 yards into the end zone to pull Charlotte to 10-7 with 10:58 left. The Owls sealed it when Rose scored with 1:28 remaining.
Kalif Phillips led the 49ers (2-2, 1-1) with 165 yards rushing on 29 carries.
It was Charlotte’s first-ever Conference USA home game. UTEP 27, Incarnate Word 17: Ryan Metz threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns as UTEP pulled away late to beat FCS-Incarnate Word 27-17.
Metz, who was 20-of-28 passing, also ran for 46 yards to lead all UTEP (2-2) rushers. Hayden Plinke grabbed four passes for 80 yards and Jaquan White pulled in seven for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Jay Mattox, who nailed a careerbest 50-yard field goal in the second quarter, made a 32-yarder with 10:01 remaining in the fourth to give the Miners a 20-17 lead. On the next series Metz hit White on a 36-yard scoring play for the final margin with 4:57 left.
The score was tied at 17-17 after three quarters.
Trent Brittain led the Cardinals (2-2), throwing for 295 yards and two touchdowns and running for another 63 yards. Jamari Gilbert grabbed four passes for 154 yards and two scores.
Colorado State 33, Texas-San
Antonio 31: Nick Stevens threw three touchdowns to lead Colorado State to a 33-31 win over Texas-San Antonio.
Stevens completed 15 of 28 passes for 255 yards for the Rams (2-2). Jasen Oden, Jr. rushed for 143 yards and a score.
Texas-San Antonio’s Jalen Rhodes ran for a 13-yard score on the game’s first possession. Stevens answered for the Rams with a 34-yard touchdown strike to Xavier Williams to even the score.
After the Rams trailed 17-16 at the break, Stevens opened the second half with a pair of touchdown passes, one to Deionte Gaines and another to Rashard Higgins, to give Colorado State a 30-17 edge with 6:20 left in the third quarter. A field goal by Wyatt Bryan early in the fourth sealed the win.
Blake Bogenshutz had 153 yards and a score for the Roadrunners (0-4). Jarveon Williams ran for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
