- Dr. Tonia Cox

Q: Flu season is here. What is the best way to ensure I don’t get sick? A: The most effective measure you can take is to get a flu vaccine. Influenza hits the Chattanooga area in December, and usually peaks during January and February. There is still time to get your flu shot in. The flu causes a miserable illness that can interfere with plans, cause you or your child to miss work or school and sometimes triggers life-threatening complications.

If you think you might have the flu see your doctor, you may be a candidate for an anti-viral medication that could shorten your illness and make you less contagious to those around you.

Stay home if you are sick. Take care of yourself, so that you feel better sooner and avoid spreading illness to others who may be vulnerable due to age or medical condition.

Wash your hands well with warm water and soap (or use hand sanitizer) before eating, touching your face, or after touching objects that may be contaminated (public door knobs, elevator buttons, shopping carts, etc.) Always cover your face when sneezing or coughing, and encourage your children to do the same.
