Allen Bean

Allen Albert Bean, 69, of Soddy- Daisy, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016. He was an avid car enthusiast and had worked at Dupont for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Bean, of Soddy Daisy; daughters, Angie (Greg) Barley, of Soddy Daisy, Christy (Rick) Gann, of Hixson; stepdaught­er, Buffy (Kevin) Loveday, of Chattanoog­a; grandchild­ren, Kadie and Jesie England, Molly, Dylan, and Christian Barley, Zack and Kennedy Johnson, Sherelen Hodges and Logan Loveday; great- granddaugh­ter, Emma Kate; and his beloved dog, Boo Boo.

Freda Benton

Freda Mae Hampton Benton, 64, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, at her residence. She will lie-in-state today, at 10 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home, followed by a visitation at noon.

Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery, with Pastor Alan Harrington as the eulogist.

David C. Blackburn Jr.

David C Blackburn Jr., 80 of Chattanoog­a, died Monday, March 7, 2016, at home. Born in St. Petersburg, Fla., he lived in Chattanoog­a over 50 years.

He served in the United States Coast Guard for four years, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. A graduate of the University of Florida, with a degree in Electrical Engineerin­g, he spent his 30-year career with the Tennessee Valley Authority designing Power System Protection and Control Schemes.

He was member of Chattanoog­a Engineers Club, serving as the audio-visual technician. A lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic­s Engineers (IEEE), he set standards for the power industry while serving on the Power System Relay Committee.

His profession honored him with several awards, including IEEE Outstandin­g Power Engineer (1994), People to People award (1995), and an IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000).

A member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 50 years, he was known for his quiet contributi­ons behind the scenes, operating the sound system and serving on the maintenanc­e committee. He was particular­ly skillful in keeping the heating and air conditioni­ng system operating. He built homes with Habitat for Humanity. His mission work at the church camp at Bethany Hills and other places set an example of how to be a loving servant in a world filled with many needs.

In his community he was known for keeping snow plowed from streets and driveways, cutting grass, and other caring activities. One of his greatest pleasures was driving the golf cart in the parking lots as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his father David C. Blackburn Sr.; and his mother, Marjorie Dearmin Blackburn.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Bradley Blackburn; two sons, Wayne Parker-Blackburn and husband David, of Jacksonvil­le, Fla. and Lee Blackburn and wife Melanie of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchild­ren, Katy and Harrison; two sisters, Bettie-Love Downs and Darlene Hartley; and one brother, Dennis Blackburn Sr.

The family thanks Hospice of Chattanoog­a, the staffs of Memorial Hospital, Siskin and Siskin West, and those who skillfully cared for him at home, as well as those who sent loving messages during his long illness.

Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church, 650 McCallie Ave., at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016.

Interment will follow at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery.

John Boyle Jr.

John James Boyle, Jr., 69, of Chattanoog­a, died suddenly Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

John is originally from Philadelph­ia, but has been a longtime resident of Chattanoog­a and spent his career working at the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP).

He is survived by his two children, John and Christina; sister, Anna Marie Metzner; and his dear companion, Sharon Roberson.

A celebratio­n of his life, will be held on Friday, March 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Basilica of St. Peter & Paul.

Interment at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery will be at a later date.

Merle “Fred” Brumlow

WHITWELL — On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, God took home one of his beloved, Merle Leo “Fred” Brumlow, of Whitwell.

Born in Chattanoog­a, to Fred and Geneva Brumlow (Davidson). Graduate of Whitwell High School. Loyal Marine, loving father, grandfathe­r, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Marjorie Rose.

Employed at Chicago Rawhide for over 35 years, resident of Elgin, Ill until retiring back home to Whitwell.

Terry G. Farr

Terry G. Farr, 50, has been granted his angel wings following a short, but hard fought battle with cancer on Saturday, March 5, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, at his home in Chattanoog­a.

Terry was born on June 20, , 1965, in Chattanoog­a, to Ida Ann Farr and Oscar Marvin Farr. He was a long-long member of Bayside Baptist Church. Terry had a special spirit with a unique sense of humor and was loved by all who met him. Terry will be sadly missed.

Terry is survived by his mother, Ann Brown; sister Melody (Ken) Tabiner; nieces, Ashley McCarver and Jayden Langdale; nephews, Alex Henderson, Matthew Privett and Julian Keef; and various cousins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Mar 11, 2016, from 11 a. m.-1 p. m., at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace, with a service to follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Judith Hanes

Judith Mae Hanes, 66, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

Judy was born and raised in Oneida, N.Y. She joined the Air Force in July of 1969, where she served as a Dental Assistant. She was of the Baptist faith and moved to Chattanoog­a, after retiring as a Dental Hygienist to be close to her son. Judy was proud of her Indian heritage and enjoyed going to Pow Wows. She also enjoyed football, gardening and laughing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Louis Rudolph, Sr.; and brothers, Raymond and Louis, Jr.

Surviving are her son, Jason Tucker and his wife, Laurie; grandchild­ren, Maverick and Talli; sisters, Barbara, Donna, Louise, Karen, Christine, Virginia, Susan, Pam, Kim, Georgianna, Toni, Brenda and Marsha; many nieces; and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 -7 p.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the funeral home.

Harriett Kirby

Harriett Kirby, 82, passed away March 1, 2016, at her residence. She was a member of Olivet Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shephard and May hood Wise; husband, Lewis Kirby; two brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include a nephew, Augustus Sturdivant; great niece, Bresha Sturdivant; cousin and caretaker, Lonnie Mae (James) Tucker; a host of other relatives.

Thomas “Boot-Tee” Lazenby, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016, in a local hospital.

He was a graduate of Howard High School, class of 1960. He was a member of Greater Faith Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Thomas was the owner of Thomas Cleaning Service for 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Carrie Lazenby, Sr; sister, Harriet Rodgers; brothers, Herbert Lazenby and Warren Lazenby, Jr.

Survivors include his devoted companion, Mattie Smith; daughter, Bonita Smith; granddaugh­ter, Chicoya Smith; brothers, Ulysses (Brenda) Lazenby and Hubert (Earlene) Lazenby; sister, CheeChee ( Anthony) Brown, all of Chattanoog­a; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.

Freddie Warren Jr.

Freddie Dillard Warren Jr., 70, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Monday, March 7, 2016, peacefully at his home.

He was a 1963 graduate of Howard High School and attended Chattanoog­a State Vocational Culinary School. Freddie Jr. was a United States Army veteran and served in the Vietnam War. He served with the rank of E5 as a medi vac and cook. He earned several service medals and good conduct awards. He retired after 49 years with Mueller Manufactor­y Fire Hydrant Company. Freddie Jr. was a faithful and honored member of Mount Canaan Baptist Church, on June 3, 2012 inducted as a member of the Patriarch of Faith Hall of Fame, where he was a prayer partner to many and a true legend. Freddie touched many lives and was a giving and caring person. He loved and knew Jesus as his savior. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Chattanoog­a and the Mount Canaan Church Family. Darrel Hatfield

JASPER — Darrel Titus Hatfield, 57, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in a Chattanoog­a hospital.

Darrel loved God and played music at many churches around the area. He especially loved his boys, whom he had raised.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Goldie Hatfield; brothers, Prater, Jr. and Homer Ray Hatfield; and sisters, Bonnie Sue Griffith and Charlotte Jane Melear.

Survivors include his sons, Jonathan and William Hatfield; daughters, Carolina and Isabella Hatfield; brothers, Doyal and James Hatfield; sisters, Opal Jean Lewis, Florence Herzman, Patsy Banther, Bevelyn Ecklund and June Brown; grandsons, Hunter and Colton Hatfield.

Elizabeth James

WAVERLY — Ms. Elizabeth “Libby” Aileen Berry James, 60, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016, in Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville. Ms. James was born March 24, 1955, in Nashville, to William H. and Martha Aileen DeRieux Berry.

She earned her master’s degree in Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a, and also earned her master’s degree in education administra­tion.

She moved to Waverly from Johnson City, Tenn., about 35 years ago. Ms. James was a professor and music teacher at Waverly Elementary School. She was a member of the Humphreys County Education Associatio­n and the Tennessee Education Associatio­n.

A celebratio­n of life, is planned for Saturday, March 12, 2016, from 5-8 p.m., with an informal service and time for sharing at 7 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of McEwen Fellowship Hall, 75 Long Street West, McEwen, Tenn.

Geneva Jay

KINGSPORT — Geneva Ann Jay, 79, died March 7, 2016.

Geneva was born May 8, 1936, in Knoxville, to the late David and Mae Humphrey. She was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Tenn.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Jackie L. Jay.

Geneva is survived by her son, Gregory (Karen) Jay, of Round Hill, Va.; daughter, Deborah (Wes) Stephenson, of Ooltewah, Tenn.; brothers, Leroy and Ronnie Humphrey, both of Knoxville; sister, Maxine Humphrey, of Knoxville; and six grandchild­ren.

BIRCHWOOD — Richard Lynn LeRoy Long, 39, passed away at his residence on March 7, 2016. He was of the Baptist faith. He wa s raised by his grandparen­ts, Wilma “Moma” and James Goode.

Richard was pre - ceded in death by his grandparen­ts, Wilma and James Goode, Billy Joe LeRoy, and Charlene Owens.

Richard is survived by his two daughters, Kelly Nicole LeRoy, of Apison, Tenn. and Alivia Lynnee Long, of Trenton, Ga.; one son, Austin Millard, of Decatur, Tenn.

Claude S. Simpson

CLEVELAND — Claude S. Simpson, bridge contractor and businessma­n, died on Monday, March 7, 2016, at CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanoog­a due to complicati­ons from surgery.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1928, near McDonald, Tenn. and lived in Bradley County his entire life. Claude lived an active life up to the date of his death.

He is the son of the late Carlos Colburn and Winnie Bell Everett Simpson and was preceded in death by his three older brothers, Carlos Eugene Simpson, Joe Hughlin Simpson, and Hugh Deadrick Simpson; brother in law, James Oliver Self; and sisters in law, Josephine Elizabeth Morelan Simpson and Elizabeth Neeley Liggett Simpson.

Claude graduated from Bradley High School in 1946 where he was vice president of his senior class and captain of the 1946 football team. Following High School, in June 1948, Claude and his father Carlos and brothers founded Simpson Constructi­on Company. The firm, which is active to this date, continues to build bridges, culverts, railway structures, and specialize­d heavy structural constructi­on in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississipp­i, and Virginia. Claude was also owner of Cleveland Ready Mix, and co-owner of Ross Prestresse­d Concrete, Greenstar Constructi­on, and Interstate Concrete Constructi­on.

Many bridges over the rivers of east and middle Tennessee are the product of Claude’s work. He spanned the French Broad, Doe, Hiwassee, Holston, Clinch, Caney Fork, Tellico, Elk, Conasauga, Sequatchie, Little Tennessee, Harpeth, Obey and many more rivers and creeks of the Tennessee Valley (many of them multiple times). Locally, Exit 20 on I-75 and the Hiwassee Bridge on US11 at Resolute Forest Products are only a couple of his many Bradley County projects over sixty years.

Claude enjoyed many things including hunting, fishing, and University of Tennessee football, but he especially was known for quietly supporting educationa­l and charitable causes. One example is the Carlos and Winnie Simpson Scholarshi­p at the University of Tennessee that continues to help many young lives.

Survivors include his sister, Bettye Louise Simpson Self, of Crystal River, Fla.; sister in law, Betty Frances Cartwright Simpson, of Atlanta, Ga.; his friend and companion, Dot Carson, of Cleveland, Tenn. and her children and family; and nine nieces and nephews, and their spouses and their children.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2016, at 1 p.m,. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Doyle A. McCracken officiatin­g.

Tom Skipper

JASPER — James Thomas “Tom” Skipper, born April 23, 1930, died March 6, 2016, after living with dementia for several years.

Preceded in death by his wife, Billie Faye Skipper; brother, George Richard Skipper; sisters, Irene Simmons and Betty Shores; parents, Jim and Carolyn Skipper; and niece, Sherry Adams, all of Chattanoog­a. Survived by daughter Phyllis Rose and son-in-law Carl Rose, of Nashville; sister, Martha Adams,of Chattanoog­a; brother, Franklin Skipper and sister-in-law, Marjorie, of Clinton, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Shirley Fournier and brother- in- law LeGrand T. Fournier, of Athens, Ga.; many nieces; nephews; grand nieces; nephews; great-grand nieces; and nephews.

Tom’s career began as a teen in a North Chattanoog­a butcher shop. After graduating from City High School, he attended UTC, majoring in Physics until 1953 when he began active duty in the U.S. Army. He then served two years in the Army National Guard. During his college and army years he served as a freelance news photograph­er supplying photos to local newspapers and television stations.

After the army he worked for Bell Telephone Company and Southern Railway as well as the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy. He was a member of Rescue and Civil Defense and a licensed amateur radio operator. He constructe­d most of his own ham radio equipment and was a frequent customer of Curle Radio in Chattanoog­a, maybe even their best customer as they hired him as Purchasing Agent. He worked there until 1967. Then continued in purchasing until 1996 when he retired from the Hamilton County Government and moved to Jasper, Tenn., a mile from the lake and a chance to go fishing whenever he wished.

He is remembered by his family and later his caregivers for his dry sense of humor and willingnes­s to help. He was an ordained deacon in the Baptist Church. He loved God, country and family, an occasional Churchill cigar and fly fishing the Tellico.

The service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Tate Funeral Home, Jasper, Tenn.

She worked for Daisy Head Start for over 15 years and liked to knit.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Moore; and step-father, Robert “Rabbit” Moore.

PALMER — James “Jimmy” B. Walker, Jr., 69, passed away on March 8, 2016.

Jimmy was a longtime resident of the Chattanoog­a area and was a graduate of Red Bank High School. He later relocated to Palmer, Tenn., where he remained until his death. He was a car salesman most of his life with different area dealers. Jimmy loved nature and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Kat Walker.

Jimmy is survived by his three children, Jamie and Julie Walker, Thomas “Skip” and Joanna Walker and Shana and Jim Williams; nine grandchild­ren; sister, Judi (Norfleet) Felton; and one nephew, Jimmy Norris.

ALABASTER — Joseph T. Mason, 91, formerly of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2016. Joe graduated from Central High School in Chattanoog­a before joining the U.S. Navy. He fought in the Pacific Theatre WWII. He attended the University of Houston, and graduated from the University of Tennessee, with a degree in Electrical Engineerin­g. Mr. Mason was employed by Western Electric, DuPont, and Arnold Engineerin­g Developmen­t Center.

Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Dietzen; and parents, Joseph T. and Alice Wright Mason.

He is survived by his son, William Joseph Mason; daughter, Priscilla ( Dale) Mason Gray; grandchild­ren, Valerie Gray (Chris) Sanner, Todd (Stephanie) Gray, Drew Mason, Ryan Mason and Katie Mason; and great-grandchild­ren, Tyler Aaron Gray, Aiden Matthew Gray and Brooke Alysse Sanner.

The graveside service for Mr. Mason will be at noon on Friday, March 11, 2016, at Forest Hills Cemetery, in Chattanoog­a.
