HAMILTON COUNTY Martha Askew

Martha Askew, 84, of Lookout Valley, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Manorhouse Assisted Living Facility. She was born December 3, 1931, in St. Elmo to the late Robert Cliffton and Katherine Sliger Twyman.

A lifelong resident of Lookout Valley, she graduated from Central High School in 1949. Martha was a former employee at Erlanger Hospital as a seamstress and Lookout Valley High School as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Wauhatchie United Methodist Church for over 50 years and active in her Sunday School class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Samuel Askew. Survivors include her stepmother, Louise Twyman of Lake Wales, Fla.; her children, Kyle (Kay) Askew and daughter, Karen (Tom) Blockley; grandchild­ren, Matthew Askew, Meghan (Brad) Appleberry, Morgan A. (Chris) Morgan, Heath Blockley, Brad Blockley, Josh (Tara) Blockley and Hayley Blockley; five great-grandsons.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday, May 16th, at Wauhatchie United Methodist Church with Rev. Christine Dowling Soka officiatin­g, followed by burial in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West. Pallbearer­s will be Heath Blockley, Josh Blockley, Brad Blockley, James Parker, Brad Appleberry, Chris Morgan, and Dalyn Askew. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace.

Naya Buchanan, 13, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, in a Nashville hospital.

Josephine Byrne

Josephine C. Byrne, 93, of Bloomfield, Conn., and formerly of Chattanoog­a, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2016.

The wife of the late James E. Byrne Sr., she was born on Aug. 25, 1921, in Chattanoog­a, second daughter of the late James Alphonsus and Lucy Whitener Crimmins. Josephine graduated from Notre Dame High School and went on to McKenzie Business School.

She worked for Joy Floral Company as a bookkeeper and designer/florist for many years. Josephine and “Jimmy” were married on June 17, 1950. Jim’s job with Combustion Engineerin­g Company took them from Chattanoog­a to New Rochelle, N.Y., to Colonial, N.J., before settling down in Bloomfield in 1960. She was active at Sacred Heart Church for the rest of her life. Josephine served as chairperso­n of the ways and means committee of the Tabernacle Society; a Eucharisti­c Minister; chairperso­n of Women’s Guild; chairperso­n of the Cadillac raffle and the annual Father/ Son and Mother/Daughter dinners; chairperso­n of the dinners for the homeless and served as the parish bookkeeper from 1980 until 2013. She was the President of Interfaith Homes Corporatio­n of Bloomfield and served on the town Human Relations Committee.

She also served as the President of the Greater Hartford Council for Catholic Women, served on the Archdioces­an Board of Connecticu­t Catholic Women, was a Catholic Family Services coordinato­r and a member of the Catholic Family Services Board. She chaired the Archbishop’s Annual Scholarshi­p Dinner Dance which provided scholarshi­ps for employees at Catholic Family Services.

In 1981, Josephine was named by Pope John Paul II to receive the Pontifical pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award for her church and civic involvemen­t. Josephine and her beloved Jimmy were inseparabl­e and shared their many years of happiness with family, friends and everyone they touched.

She is survived by her son, James E. Byrne Jr. and his wife Janet, of Chattanoog­a; her daughter, Josephine Quintana and her husband Matthew, of West Simsbury, Conn.; her daughter, Mary Pat Byrne of Brandon, Fla.; her son, John Byrne and his wife Kathleen of Mentor, Ohio; seven grandchild­ren, Matthew and Brendan Quintana, Hannah Byrne, Madeline, Aiden and Cameron Byrne and Natasha Trudell.

Besides her parents she was predecease­d by her sisters, Mary Elinore Crimmins and Catherine Imelda Dean, and her nephew, Joseph Patrick Dean.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 18, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield.

Burial will follow at Mount St. Benedicts Cemetery, Bloomfield.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. at the church.

Arthur Harris, 82, of Chattanoog­a, passed away at his residence.

Otis Putman Jr.

Otis Leon Putman Jr., 75, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016, in a local hospital.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from UTC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Grace Putman Sr.; brother, Jessie Herman.

Survivors include his wife, Edneva Putman; son, Otis Putman III; daughters, Darlene Putman, Stephanie Putman, Yolanda Putman, Teresa Putman and Cynthia Moore (Micheal) Smith, all of Chattanoog­a; 15 grandchild­ren; 15 great-grandchild­ren; brothers, Raymond (Carol) Jones, of Connecticu­t, and Calvin (Willie Mae) Brown, of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Elvira Herman, of Chattanoog­a; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; special friends, Calvin Few, Darlene Shackelfor­d, Nathaniel Harris Sr., and many others.

He will lie in state today after 12:30 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery, with Brother Nathaniel Harris Sr. giving words of comfort.

Lois King

Lois E. King, of Hixson, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2016, at her home with her family by her side.

Born Feb. 27, 1934, in Gruetli-Laager, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Earnest J. and Grace Christian.

Mrs. King had made Chattanoog­a her home the majority of her life. She worked with the Ullenburg Corporatio­n for 26 years as well as with Dixie Yarns.

Lois was married to Robert Earl “Bob” King for over 60 years. The two of them, along

with many friends, enjoyed square dancing.

On Sundays, she enjoyed worship with the Lord at Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle, where she was a longtime member.

Lois loved to be outdoors gardening and enjoying the sunshine. She loved planting vegetables, canning and planting flowers. When not outdoors, she could be found cooking a feast, as was a tradition on Sundays for her family.

She especially loved Christmas, making cookies and sweet treats alongside her daughters and granddaugh­ters.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Ricky Earl King, and brother, E.J. Christian Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Robert “Bob” King; two daughters, Tammy (Robbie) Creswell and Leisa Voss; three granddaugh­ters, Tiffany Voss, Lacy and Ally Creswell; brother, Leon (Pansy) Christian.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2016, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Stancil officiatin­g.

Interment will follow in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillie Nunn Lovell, 88, of Georgetown, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016. She was born in Chattanoog­a to the late Benjamin and Mary Houser Nunn. Lillie graduated from Tyner High School, Class of 1945. She was a lifelong member of Silverdale Cumberland Presbyteri­an Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years.

Lillie and her late husband, Thomas, were the owners of Dust-Tex Rental Service, having locations in Chattanoog­a, Knoxville and Huntsville, Ala. We thank God for blessing us with her for these 88 wonderful years. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Lee Lovell Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Womack, Chattanoog­a; sons, Tom Lovell Jr., Washburn, Tenn, John Lovell, Chattanoog­a, and Jeff and Hilda Lovell, Georgetown; grandchild­ren, Amy McCawley, Zachary Lovell, Katie Lovell, Rebecca Rowland, Samuel Lovell, Nicole Shurette and John Thomas Lovell; five great-grandchild­ren; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

James Meeks

James A. Meeks, 71, of Hixson, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016. He was a United States Air Force veteran and a member of the American Legion.

James was a pipefitter with Norfolk Southern Railway and a member of SMWIA Local 267 for 28 years.

His wife, Judy Ann Clinan Meeks, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his daughters, Brooke (Jason) Miller and Kelly Webster; two stepsons, Keith (Gail) Clingan and Barry (Amy) Clingan; three sisters, Sedina LeFevor, Dollis Smith and Glenny Berry; and six grandchild­ren.

The service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2016, at Chatanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

Melva Morrison, 60, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016.

Miriam Myers

Miriam Daisy Beck Myers was born on Jan. 19, 1928, in Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname, South America, to Rudolf Jacob Louis Beck and Ester Beatrice Durban. She fell asleep with our Savior on 8 May 8, 2016, at home in Collegedal­e.

Miriam was the eighth child and only girl in a family of ten siblings. She graduated from Caribbean Training College in 1948, completing studies in Secretaria­l Science. Moving to Canada in 1955, she studied at Canadian Union College, where she met Cyril Alexander Myers. They were married on July 28, 1957, and maintained their love for nearly 58 years; their blessed union brought seven children into their family. She valued a good education above everything but a loving relationsh­ip with Jesus.

Completing her Bachelor of Theology in 1957, she also graduated from Andrews University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1972 and a Master of Arts in Education in 1978. She and her husband began 14 years of active ministry in the Lake Region and South Central Conference­s of Seventh-day Adventists in 1959. Daisy was a gifted salesperso­n, working her way through college as a colporteur. She and Cyril were also gifted with the ability raise money. Their ministry raised the needed funds to build four church facilities. All four remain today.

Her teaching career began in the public schools in Meridian, Miss., and continued in Benton Harbor, Mich. Recognized as a very effective Reading Specialist, over the years many young profession­als from all discipline­s returned to her classroom to thank her for encouragin­g them to excel in school.

Daisy was an accomplish­ed pianist, introducin­g her children to music at an early age. Four of the seven became successful music teachers. That love of music continues in her grandchild­ren.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, spending holidays together and attending events that involved her children and grandchild­ren.

Dearly missed by her family, she is survived by her six children, Sharon Ramos, Michael (Denise), Candace Myers Nesmith (Douglas), Lois Myers-Mirmotahar­i, Cyril Jr. (Marcella) and James; 17 grandchild­ren, Christina, Julian, Michael “Aander”, Esther, Josef, Johannes, Micaela, Silviane, Christiann­a, Danyelle, Alexander, Angelina, Calvin, Miriam, Mina, Jonathan and Gabrielle; one great-grand-daughter, Laila, and one great-grandson.

Her beloved husband Cyril passed away on May 9, 2015. Nine brothers and her son, Paul, also preceded her in death.

Herbert Renegar

Herbert Lorenze Renegar, 87, of Red Bank, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016.

He was born in Miami, Fla., Oct. 23, 1928.

Mr. Renegar graduated from Kirkman Vocational School and worked as a draftsman before joining the Navy in 1951.

He spent three years at Pensacola Naval Air Station as a Tradesman, teaching instrument flight as well as being the Unit draftsman. After his Navy tour, he spent over 20 plus years in the Missile Industry at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral.

When he returned to Chattanoog­a, he worked for Astec and later retired from McKee Baking Company.

In his youth, he played the tenor drums in the Miami Drum and Bugle Corps for eight years and later played in the Recruit Drum and Bugle Corps in San Diego, Calif.

“Bud” enjoyed outdoor activities, especially with his family and friends. He had a terrific sense of humor and will be greatly missed by those left behind. He was of the Presbyteri­an faith.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Royals Getchell Renegar; father, Frederick Herbert L. Royals; sister, Jo Ellen Wells and her husband, LeBron; grandfathe­r, Eldie Renegar; grandmothe­r, Neppie Lacey; step-grandfathe­r, Herbert Lacey; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Reecie A. Renegar; son, Steve A. Renegar and his wife, Rhonda; granddaugh­ter, Jessica Lynn Renegar; uncle, Robert T. Lacey and his wife, Dottie and family; niece, Wanda Markham and her husband, Steve and family; and nephew, Gary Lee Ashley and his wife, Cindy and family.

Christina B. Shaver-Schuman

Christina Brockett Shaver-Schuman, 40, a beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister, passed away peacefully, in her sleep after battling liver failure on, May 12, 2016.

Christina was born in Chattanoog­a, on March 25, 1976, to David Brockett and Sandra Rogers Jackson.

She was a graduate of Chattanoog­a Central High School. After high school, she attended Middle Tennessee State University and later Chattanoog­a State Community College.

Christina enjoyed being an active member of Sweet Lamb Fellowship. A movie enthusiast, she also found joy in painting, reading, cooking, and playing with her puppies. As a devoted wife and loving mother, she adored spending time with family most of all.

Hansel “Pete” Smith, 74, of Sale Creek, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016. He was a highly decorated United States Marine Corps veteran, having served two tours in the Vietnam War. Hansel was also a member of the Daisy Masonic Lodge #706 F&AM.

He is survived by his daughter, Christiann­e (Leon) Martin; his grandchild­ren, Mykala Janele Martin, Allyiah Evalin-Mae Martin, Riley Jenkins Martin and Emmerson Rose Martin; two sisters, Glenda Bice and Pharon Pierce; and four brothers, Van Smith, Richard Smith, Gary Smith and Ricky Smith.

Lucy Turner

Lucy Lawler “Puddin” Turner, 75, passed away at NHC Care Facility, following a lengthy illness, on May 11, 2016.

She was educated in the Chattanoog­a School system. Lucy later began a career as a chef for Bethea’s restaurant, where she developed an excellent reputation and many lasting friendship­s that afforded her many opportunit­ies around the city. Lucy spent her life selflessly serving others. Sacrificin­g to help her family achieve their dreams, caring for those who needed her most.

The family is very thankful for the 10 years of loving care provided by the staff of NHC.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William Lawler and Naomi Nowells Lawler; her sister and brother-n-law, Beatrice and Malvin Grimes; brothers, Edward Lawler Sr. and Charles Lawler; nephews, Anthony Grimes Sr. and Cleveland “Deany” Grimes; nieces, Tammy Jolley and Karen Grimes.

Lucy leaves many loved ones to cherish her memory her three children, Cassandra “Picky” Lawler, Lisa Lawler and Darrell Turner, all of Chattanoog­a; sister, Jesse Jolley, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and grandchild­ren, Jordan Lawler, Michael Turner, Teyona Stewart, Daryl Turner, India Roby.

Theresa Johnson Willerson, 48, of Ooltewah, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016.

She was employed for over 16 years at Wallace A. Smith Elementary School and most recently was a stay-at-home grandmothe­r, caring for her grandchild­ren whom she adored.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmothe­r.

TENNESSEE Martha Sue Baker

SOUTH PITTSBURG — Martha Sue Howard Shafer Baker, 69, of Walbridge, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

Martha was born on April 22, 1947, to Hugh and Louise Clark Howard in New Hope, Tenn.

She married Kempie L. Baker on Oct. 1, 1998, in Monteagle, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Allen Howard; two infant brothers; and a sister, Barbara Faye Kelly.

Martha retired from RB& W, where she worked for many years. To her friends she was known as Marty, to her friends and family in the south, Sue, and to all her grandkids, Baby.

She was loved by everyone and always had a smile on her face. She will be very missed.

She is survived by her husband, Kempie Baker, of Ohio; her mother, Louise Howard; daughters, Debby (William) Johnson and Brenda (Jason) Webb; grandchild­ren, Michale (Becca) Johnson, Levi Myers (Naomi Woody), Jessica (Adam) Gauthier, Kelly (Brady) Cox; great-grandchild­ren, Zoey and Charlie Myers and Kolton Webb.

Funeral services will be held at the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home at 2 p.m., CDT on Monday, May 16, 2016, with visitation from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at New Hope Cemetery.

SWEETWATER — Joyce Edna Fentress, 78, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, May 13, 2016, after a long illness.

She was born in Newark, N.J., on Friday, Jan. 13, 1938, to Robert and Henrietta Hempel. All of her life was devoted to loving and caring for her family as well as numerous others who knew her as “Nanny” and “Gigi.” She was a elegant lady who loved sewing, quilting, dancing and music.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Fentress Jr.; and son, Robert W. Fentress III.; her parents and two siblings.

She is survived by her sons, Dale Fentress, of Hulbert, Okla., Craig (Wendy) Fentress, of Athens, Tenn.; daughters, Patty (Bobby) Vinson, of Sweetwater, Pam (Bill) Fortney, New Bern, N.C.; grandchild­ren, Brooke and Rodrigo Rios, Jenny and Matt Tilley, Katie and Kristina Sams, Brad Fentress, Rachel and Phillip Kohler, Sarah and Ben Sparrow, Anna Vinson, Rebekah and John Francis, Ashley Vinson and Philip Vinson; great-grandchild­ren, Maddy, Ben and Cooper Tilley, Victoria, Santi and Luca Rios, Elijah and Raynah Sparrow, Lydia and Anna Kohler, and Oliver Sols; sister, Carol (Carl) DeMarco; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Willie Margaret Haney

ATHENS — Willie Margaret “Bill” Haney Underdown, 98, passed away peacefully Thursday night, May 12, 2016.

She was born in Murphy, N.C., but spent most of her life in McMinn County, and was a daughter of the late Benjamin Luther and Mary Jo Rogers Haney. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clay McKlwee Underdown.

She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was known for her sense of style, which she put to good use working in several retail clothing stores in Athens. She took great pride in her flowers and garden.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jo Darling, and son-in-law, James Patrick Darling (Col. U.S. Army Ret.) of Chattanoog­a; and a granddaugh­ter, Dr. Jama Margaret Darling of Chapel Hill, N.C.

There will be no formal visitation.

CLEVELAND — Kristen Marie “Krissy” Howard, 45, passed away May 11, 2016, after a lengthy battle with heart disease.

She was a life-long member of Zion Baptist Church, Benton, and Cohulla Baptist Church in Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Hammontree Jr.; and loving grandmothe­rs, Gerthel Fulbright, Clyde Hammontree, and Etheleen Rymer.

She was a graduate of Polk County High School and attended Cleveland State Community College.

Until disabled, she worked for Cleveland Bank & Trust and American General Finance.

She is survived by her parents, Sam and Janice Rymer, of Benton, Tenn.; a sister, Paula (Greg) Harbison; and neice and nephew, Abby and Burch Harbison of Delano, Tenn. Also surviving, is her best friend, Walter Eugene Howard; his daughter, Megan (Jordan) Shepherd; and grandchild­ren, Jaxon and Emma Shepherd, all of Gatesville, Texas.

TRENTON — Ronald Dean Ellis, 78, passed away early Saturday morning, May 14, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was retired from Combustion Engineerin­g after 40-plus years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed giving back to the community while working at Ryan Funeral Home in Trenton. He was a loving husband, father, and pawpaw whom had a heart of gold and enjoyed playing with his grandkids, farming, and attending sporting events.

Mr. Ellis was a lifelong member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

Mr. Ellis is preceded in death by his parents, N.C. and Inez Ellis; and his twin brother, Donald Ellis.

Johnny (John) Duncan McRae, 69, of Port Ritchie, Fla., passed peacefully to Heaven on May 4, 2016.

He was born on August 4, 1946, in Chattanoog­a.

He took pride in his military heritage and proudly served in the U. S. Army before beginning his career in the Engineerin­g field. He worked for Perry Smith, The Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant and spent the final 10 years of his career as a Facilities Manager at Hutcheson Medical Center.

John loved spending time with his children and grandchild­ren, fishing, boating, building RC cars and never saw a home improvemen­t project he couldn’t tackle.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, John Duncan and Louise McRae; sister, Montyne Carroll; and brothers, Ronald McRae and Donald McRae.
