Martha Brown

Martha L. Brown, 81, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

Martha was a resident of Soddy-Daisy, and was a devoted member of the Christ Family Church.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ed Brown, and her daughter, Wanda Skelton.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann Brown of Bakewell, Tenn.; sisters, Bertha Cannon of Soddy-Daisy and Louise Brown of Hixson, Tenn.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in the funeral home chapel Saturday, June 4, 2016, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Mart Zingerman presiding.

Interment to follow in Smith Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and loved ones from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the funeral home.

Laura Bunch, 45, of Chattanoog­a passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, at her home.

Randal Davis

Randal Anthony Davis, 42, of Chattanoog­a, passed away May 29, 2016, at his residence.

He will lie in state today at 10 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

The funeral follows at noon in the chapel with Terrance Fleming as the eulogist.

Jimmie Eaton

James “Jimmie” Eaton, a longtime Chattanoog­a-area resident, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016, in Nashville, Tenn. He was 90 years old.

Jimmie was born on Oct. 31, 1925, and grew up in McMinnvill­e, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, graduated from Lipscomb College, and earned a Master’s Degree from Peabody College before embarking on a life of ministry.

The last 50 years of his ministry were spent in the Chattanoog­a area and on various mission trips throughout the world. He was much beloved and touched many lives. Jimmie enjoyed University of Tennessee sports, big band music, history, but most of all he loved storytelli­ng.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anne.

He is survived by his three children, Steve (Margaret) Eaton of Atlanta, Ga., Mark (Debbie) Eaton of Franklin, Tenn., and Libby (Frank) Hutchison of Roswell, Ga.; seven cherished grandchild­ren, Kelly, Jenny, Lindsay, Jake, David, Lauren and Frank; and 15 wonderful great-grandchild­ren.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Red Bank Church of Christ.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Red Bank Church of Christ Mission Fund.

Eula Emling

Eula Marie Gothard Conner Emling, of Hixson, was called to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, June 2, 2016. She was 103 years old.

She was a longtime member of Hixson First Baptist Church and a charter member of King Terrace Baptist Church in Largo, Fla., where she served 25 years. Eula was called by Jesus to teach and she spend most of her active years teaching Sunday School Class. What a privilege to be called into the God’s service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Martha Gothard; brothers, Larry, Roy and Ulysses Gothard; husbands, Frazier Conner and Mansford Emling; sister, Mamie Worley; niece, Martha Rose Smith.

She is survived by four nephews, Donald, Gary “Bob,” James and Roy Worley; niece, Elsie Mae Layne.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, at the North Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home.

A Celebratio­n of Eula’s Life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016, at the North Chapel with Rev. Terry Shannon officiatin­g.

Helen Myrt Gann, 69, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Herbert Jerry Ginn, 74, a longtime resident of the Chattanoog­a area, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016, in a local healthcare facility.

H e attended Wauhatchie United Methodist Church. He was a member of Lookout Valley Masonic Lodge # 673.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mattie Reed Ginn.

Mr. Ginn is survived by his son, Jerry “Bubba” (Sheila Roden) Ginn; three daughters, Debbie Hope Ginn, Misty Ginn (Eric) Frizzell and April Ginn (James) Daniel; four grandchild­ren, Brittany Frizzell, Eric Henderson, Emily Frizzell and Hannah Ginn; best friend and brother in Christ, Terry Humphrey.

Audrey Hash

Audrey J. Hash, 82, of Chattanoog­a, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

Mrs. Hash was a 1951 graduate of Lakeview High School and held membership­s with Thankful Memorial Episcopal, Grace Episcopal and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was preceded in death by her parents, Audrey and Ed Moran, and husband, Juel Thomas Hash.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Cherie McCroskey and Kathryn Hash Wright; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Jeanette Hash; grandchild­ren, Graham Roberts, Chelsey and Chris Mangum, Robert John Wright, Lori Wright Nelson, Sandy Wright Langston, Emily Wright Larmon, Corey, Savanna and Cassidy Hash; several great-grandchild­ren.

Ted King

Theodore Franklin “Ted” King Jr. joined his Savior in heaven Wednesday morning, June 1, 2016.

A lifetime resident of Chattanoog­a, he was born to Theo F. and Hilda Hager King on August 9, 1932. His older sister, Carol King Baker, also preceded him in death.

Ted was a proud graduate of both McCallie School (1950) and Vanderbilt University (1954) and faithfully attended his class reunions and many sporting events. He later served his country in the Army during the Korean conflict.

Ted began his insurance career at Provident Life Insurance. He then joined Trotter, Boyd and Keese, which became AGA. He spent his happiest years as a partner in Huffaker Insurance, from which he later retired. He was proud to provide home visits as part of his service to his clients. He was also very involved in the Chattanoog­a community, serving with Rotary Internatio­nal and United Way and also on many local boards. He was in all respects a gentleman.

Ted’s faith was very important to him. He attended First Presbyteri­an Church until early adulthood. Following his marriage, he joined Lookout Mountain Presbyteri­an Church, where he served as usher and deacon and sang in the sanctuary choir. He faithfully attended services until just prior to his death.

Ted was predecease­d by his beloved wife, Frances “Bunny,” in November, after 52 years of marriage.

He is survived by his muchloved daughters, Hilda (Marshall) Jemison, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Ashley (Bob) Scoggins, of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchild­ren, Sarah, Ryan and Sydney Scoggins, of Huntsville, and King and Bo Jemison, of Lookout Mountain.

The family wishes to thank Caris Hospice and Bright Star for their exemplary service to our parents. We especially acknowledg­e Pep, Patty, Sarah, Cheryl, Moses and Bill from Bright Star and Lee Ann from Caris.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Lookout Mountain Presbyteri­an Church, followed by a private burial.

The family will receive friends from 10-11:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Malcolm G. Newsom

Malcolm G. Newsom, 88, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2016.

A native of Tampa, Fla., he has been a resident of the Chattanoog­a area for the past 53 years and was a member of Burks United Methodist Church. He was an Engineer with Combustion Engineerin­g, retiring in 1985, and after that retired as a Consulting Engineer in 2012. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Millie Newsom, and his brother, Duke Newsom.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Newsom; two daughters, Cathy (Roger) Puls, Memphis, and Teresa Celeste (Chuck) Wallen, Hixson; son, Greg (Anita) Newsom, Soddy-Daisy; five grandchild­ren, Cory Wallen, Casey Wallen, Chelsea Newsom, Taylor Newsom and Mattison Newsom; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the North Chapel with the Rev. Rowland Buck officiatin­g.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Margarette Ogle

Margarette Gibbs Ogle, 92, formerly of Clemson, S.C., wife of 68 years to Wayne LeRoy Ogle, died peacefully Tuesday, May 31, 2016, in Chattanoog­a.

Born in Knoxville, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Lola Clapp Gibbs.

She was a graduate of Knoxville High School. She was a retired secretary with Duke Power and was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church.

She was active in the community, having been a longtime treasurer of the Tamassee Chapter of the D.A. R., member of the Clemson Garden Club and various bridge clubs. Mrs. Ogle enjoyed friends, Clemson Heights neighbors and traveled extensivel­y throughout the country as well as overseas.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Wayne “Roy” Ogle, are her son, Anthony “Tony” Ogle of Greenville; daughter, Diane (Anthony Randolph) Riddle of Chattanoog­a; grandchild­ren, Ryan Glover, Jay Ogle, Jonathan Ogle, Tim Ogle and Randy Watkins; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2016, in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with Rev. Megan Augustine officiatin­g.

Burial will follow in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Clemson, S.C.

Jimmie Owenby

Jimmie Katherine Rogers Owenby, 87, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at a local health care facility.

Mrs. Owenby was born in Maryville, Tenn., to the late Leonard and Nancy Rogers. She was retired from Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company and was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church. She will always be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmothe­r and sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Don Owenby; infant daughter, Terry Katherine; her parents; brother, Fred Rogers; and sister, Doris Badgett.

Surviving are her son, Roger Owenby, of Chattanoog­a; daughter, Jane Harper and her husband Lee, of Signal Mountain; grandson, Lee Harper Jr. of Newport, R.I.; granddaugh­ter, Natalie Miller and her husband Matthew, of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Tom Rogers; and sister, Jean Pryor of Maryville, Tenn.

Frances “Frankie” Sharp

Frances “Frankie” Pierson Sharp, 77, died Friday, May 27, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, a brother and a sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Marnie Roden (Lee), Leslie Longshore (Shea); three grandchild­ren, Shea Longshore, Madeleine Longshore, Jackson Longshore; two brothers, five sisters, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Kingsport, Tenn., and later moved to Nashville, where she was married and raised her two girls.

She moved to Chattanoog­a in 2004, to be close to her daughters and grandchild­ren, and worked as an Assistant Manager of the Dollar General Store in Lookout Valley.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles and quilting with her sisters.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 4, 2016, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Parlor at First Baptist Church, Chattanoog­a.

Louise Sheets

Jennie Louise Sheets, 80, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, June 2, 2016. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

She retired from Bi-Lo where everyone knew her as “Weezie”. She was an avid Braves fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford M. Sheets; brothers, David Scott, Paul Scott, Billy Scott, Gene Scott and Wilson Scott.

Survivors include her sons, Ray Sheets (Debbie), Donald Sheets (Tonia), and Bruce Sheets (Charlene); daughters, Janie Sheets, Sue Thompson (Anky); brothers, Kenneth Scott (Marilyn), Bobby Scott (Debbie); sister, Cecil Teems (Buddy); 11 grandchild­ren; 16 great-grandchild­ren; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter Smartt, M.D.

Walter Haines Smartt, M.D., 94, of Lookout Mountain, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016, at his residence. He was a native Chattanoog­an, having been born in his grandfathe­r George Madison Smartt’s home on Fortwood Place in 1922.

Dr. Smartt graduated from Baylor School in 1940, Virginia Military Institute in 1944 and University of Virginia Medical School in 1948. He also earned a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1955.

He served in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon, attaining the rank of Captain, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Dr. Smartt also served as the Public Health Director for Los Angeles County, Calif.

He was a Cradle Roll Member of First Baptist Church of Chattanoog­a.

Dr. Smartt was the son of the late Harold Robert and Mary Virginia Hill Smartt. He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Harold Robert Jr. and Eleanor Overend Smartt; and their son, Harold Robert Smartt III.

Dr. Smartt is survived by his son, Edward Earl Long; one niece, Elizabeth J. Smartt, and her children, Kenneth and Paige; one nephew, James Madison Smartt, and his sons, James Madison Smartt Jr. MD and Walter Polk Smartt.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Forest Hills Cemetery, with Rev. Joe Novenson officiatin­g.

William R. Smith, 80, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Friday June 3, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Bert Smith; brothers, Lloyd Smith, Floyd Smith and Sherman Smith; and sisters, Gertrude Sunderland, Lorene Millsaps, Mary Ruth Ables, Imogene Grant and Robbie Grant.

Emily Thomas

Emily Jeanette Thomas, of Chattanoog­a, finished her life’s race on May 16, 2016, having spent her final week in the loving presence of her three children. She was 76 years old.

Emily was born on July 15, 1939, to Roscoe Clinton and Hassie Mae Runyon in Chattanoog­a. Emily spent her entire life in Chattanoog­a, having been baptized and growing up at Lupton Drive Baptist Church. Later in life, she became a faithful Soldier of the Salvation Army, Chattanoog­a Citadel and raised her children attending The Salvation Army.

Emily served faithfully for many years as the store manager at The Salvation Army store once located on McCallie Ave. Countless people were shown the Good News of Jesus by Emily in word and in deed. All who came in contact with her knew her loving, serving Spirit.

Emily was most proud of her three children, David Thomas of Chattanoog­a, Scott Thomas of Chickamaug­a, Ga., and Connie Barrington of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and her five grandchild­ren, Mckenzi Thomas of Nashville, Tenn., and Anthony, Ella, Talitha and Wesley Barrington of Oklahoma City and Noah and Nick Green of Chickamaug­a.

Emily was preceded in death by her loving parents and her husband, Franklin Lawson.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel.

Nance; sisters, Louise Brewer, Myrtis Marie Taylor and Helen Caldwell Givens, infant sisters, Martha and Julie; brothers, John Nolan, George, Hershel, Harold Clifford, Haskel, Gillam and Douglas Knowlan; step-brothers, Paul and Willie Caldwell.

She is survived by her son, Timothy G. Ina Steele Crouch

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — Ina Jean Steele Crouch, 87, recently a resident of Pawleys Island, S.C., passed away Thursday, June 2, 2016, in Georgetown.

She was born on Aug. 26, 1928, in Pamplico, S.C., to the late Charles Dargan Steele and Evelyn Shelfer Steele. Mrs. Crouch was living in Beaufort, S.C., when she met and married her beloved husband, the late Reginald W. Crouch of Greenville, S.C.

They resided in Greenville until their move to Lookout Mountain in 1970, where Mrs. Crouch was an active member of Lookout Mountain Presbyteri­an Church and the Woodland Garden Club. Devoted to her church, Mrs. Crouch was responsibl­e for overseeing the landscapin­g of the church grounds for many years. She was also instrument­al in seeing the church’s Memorial Garden become a reality.

In addition to raising her daughter, caring for her husband, and devoting many hours to community service, Mrs. Crouch was also a loving friend to many, enjoying a variety of recreation­al pursuits, including bridge, tennis, and gardening. Her personal garden was a great source of pleasure throughout her life.

Surviving are her daughter, Jean Crouch Rothrock; and her husband, Steve, of Georgetown.

The memorial service will be noon Monday at Lookout Mountain Presbyteri­an Church.

A graveside service was held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 11-11:45 a.m. Monday in the Fellowship Hall.

Rev. Henry Hooper

TRENTON — Rev. Henry Clement Hooper, 89, passed away on June 1, 2016. He was a member of the Open Door Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Glenna Della Hooper.

He is survived by his daughters, Marlynn (Jerry) Blevins of South Pittsburg, Tenn., Lanita (Jim) Sells of McDonald, Tenn., and Eileen (Ed) Stacy of Bay City, Texas, and one son, Wayne Hooper of Trenton. He also leaves behind his grandchild­ren, Jeremy Blevins, Jason Blevins, Heath Hooper, Justice Hooper, Amberly Matthews and Deidra Stacy; special friends, Carol Faye Hooper and Stephanie McCarthy Ashburn; numerous nieces and nephews; and seven great-grandchild­ren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016, at 11 a.m. in the Trenton Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin McClendon officiatin­g.

Danny Irvin

FORT OGLETHORPE — Danny Lebron Irvin, 64, died Thursday June 2, 2016, at his residence.

He was born on April 8, 1952 in McMinnvill­e Tenn. Danny was the son of the late Freeman and Dorothy Hobbs Irvin.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country with valor and honor.

Mr. Irvin was retired from The City of Chattanoog­a Fire Department after 26 years of service and four years at the City of Fort Oglethorpe Parks Department.

Danny was a local historian and loved studying the Civil War and local history and was an avid baseball fan.

Survivors are his loving children, Christina (Jason) Thomson of Atlanta and Casey Irvin of Fort Oglethorpe; and grandson, Anson Thomson.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Sims officiatin­g and Christina Thomson delivering a eulogy.

Interment in the Chattanoog­a National Cemetery with Military Honors.

RINGGOLD — Virginia Elizabeth Williams, 88, previously of Highlands, N.C., passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, at her home. She was born March 9, 1928, in Douglas, Ga., to the late James and Bertha Harrell.

She was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church and the Deborah/T.E.L. Sunday School Class.

Her husband of 62 years, Dr. Louis Andrew Williams; brothers, Henry Harrell, Jack Harrell, and James “Sally” Laura Harrel; and sisters, Mary Jeanette Dorminy and Louise Brown; preceded her in death.
