IN POSITION TO WIN

Jimenez puts himself in good spot after solid third round in Senior Open

- STAFF, WIRE REPORTS

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio — Miguel Angel Jimenez was back on top on a Saturday, this time in the U.S. Senior Open at difficult Scioto County Club. The 52-year-old Spaniard was looking for a better late Sunday afternoon result after missing chances in his last two events.

Jimenez put himself in position to break out of the title funk, finishing off a 1-under-par 69 in gusty wind and sheets of rain to take a onestroke lead. He was in a lot better shape in Scotland and Minnesota in the past two tournaments but came up empty. He is at 3-under 207.

Three weeks ago at Carnoustie in the Senior British Open, Jimenez took a four-stroke lead into the final day, only to shoot 75 and tie for third — three strokes behind winner Paul Broadhurst. Last week in the 3M Championship, Jimenez was a stroke ahead entering the final round and ended up losing when Joe Durant shot 63 and eagled the first hole of a playoff.

“Just keep playing golf and give myself patience. That’s the main thing,” Jimenez said. “Whatever happens, happens. Obviously, at the Open in Scotland, I lost that tournament there without playing bad, and here tomorrow we have to play 18 holes, and whatever happens, happens.”

Moore leads in Illinois

SILVIS, Ill. — Ryan Moore shot two more rounds of 6-under 65 to take the third-round lead in the John Deere Classic, finishing at 9:25 p.m. in nearly dark conditions. He is at 18-under 195.

Morgan Hoffman and Ben Martin each shot 62 to move within a stroke at 17 under.

Former Baylor School golfer Luke List made the cut after the second round was completed, and he shot a 2-under 69 in the third round to sit at 6-under 207 and in a tie for 50th.

Athens, Tenn., player Eric Axley missed the cut by one shot after completing his second round a day earlier. He finished at 2-under 140.

Adams slips to tie for 15th in Web.com event

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Former Dalton High School player Blake Adams had a 3-under 69 but fell from a tie for eighth to a tie for 15th after three rounds of the Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship at Highland Springs.

Adams is at 13-under 203, five shots behind leader Mackenzie Hughes, who shot an 8-under 64 for an overall 18-under 198.

Former Baylor School player Keith Mitchell and former McCallie golfer Adam Mitchell are tied for 41st at 9-under 207. Keith Mitchell fired a 3-under 69 and Adam Mitchell had a 4-under 68.

Former Baylor School and UTC golfer Stephan Jaeger had a 5-under 67 in the second round and a 1-over 73 in the third and is tied for 64th at 6-under 210.

Former UTC golfer Steven Fox missed the cut at 4-under 140 after a 3-under 69 in the second round.
