SOCCER

The UTC women’s soccer team fell to 1-2 for the season with a 2-0 loss Friday at Murray State. The visiting Mocs were credited with 18 shots and 12 on goal to 14 and 10 for Murray (1-1), but Alex Steigerwald made 12 saves in the shutout while Melia

Correa had six for UTC. Emma Heise scored from a Karsyn Hasch assist on a corner kick at 34:52, and Aaron Lankster tapped in a rolling pass from Mazie Fry 10 minutes into the second half. UTC’s Masey

Fox had three shots on goal, including one that hit the post. “For us it is improving each and every time we train and play,” Mocs coach Gavin McKinney said in a school release. “We conceded two scrappy goals and walked away disappointed. We created more than enough opportunities for ourselves.” The Mocs will host Alabama at 1 p.m. Sunday at Finley Stadium, and there is no admission charge. Alabama rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit at home to defeat Murray State 4-2 last Sunday.

The Tennessee Wesleyan University men’s soccer team began its season Friday with a 2-2 tie through two overtimes against Webber International in Savannah, Ga., and will play tournament host Savannah College of Art and Design today. Ben Timms scored at 8:58 and Jordan Jacob added a rebound goal at 22:57 for TWU’s Bulldogs, who held a 2-1 lead until the 77th minute. They outshot the Warriors 24-7, with a 9-3 advantage on goal.

Captain Serena Delgado scored twice as the Dalton State College women’s soccer team won the program’s first game ever Friday, 2-1 over Ave Maria in Jacksonville, Fla., where the Roadrunners will play again tonight. The Gyrenes from southwestern Florida took a 1-0 lead, but Delgado scored on a rebound goal and netted the go-ahead score from an Adriana Romera pass. “It was a great feeling to pull off the big win in our first-ever regular-season game,” Dalton State coach Kerem Daser said in a school release.

GOLF

Dalton State is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll for 2016-17 women’s golf, one spot behind where the Roadrunners finished last spring. “In the 15 polls that our program has been eligible for, we have been ranked inside the top 10 in 11 and in the top 14 of all of them,” coach Jim McGrew said in a Dalton State release. “That is something we are proud of. That being said, it is disappointing that we are not ranked in the top five like we belong. I hope our players take it as a slight and make it their goal to go out on the course and prove we are better than our ranking.” Also from the Southern States Athletic Conference, William Carey is ranked 13th, Coastal Georgia 16th and Faulkner 23rd. Two-time defending national champion Keiser received all 18 first-place votes.
