Rangers’ reliever charged with DWI

-

ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers reliever Jeremy Jeffress, twice suspended in the minor leagues for violating drug rules, was away from the team Friday after his overnight arrest in Dallas on a drunken driving charge. The team placed Jeffress on the restricted list before a game against Cleveland, but general manager Jon

Daniels said he expected the former Milwaukee closer acquired in a trade Aug. 1 to be back with the team today. Online records for the Dallas County jail show he was booked around 5:15 a.m. on a driving while intoxicated charge and that he was released on $500 bond. No attorney information was available for Jeffress.

AUTO RACING

FORT WORTH, Texas — While James Hinchcliffe has been leading the same IndyCar race for 11 weeks, Will Power has been piling up wins and runner-up finishes. There have been five other races completed during the unprecedented 2 1/2-month rain delay of the Texas race that is set to resume tonight. Power won three of those races and was the runner-up in the other two, moving the Team Penske driver from seventh to second in season points. When the Texas race was red-flagged because of rain after 71 of 248 scheduled laps June 12, after already having been postponed a day by wet weather, Power was 117 points behind Penske teammate Simon

Pagenaud. Now back at the high-banked, 1 1/2-mile Texas oval, Power is only 20 points behind his teammate and tied with a serieshigh four wins.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky coach John Calipari said senior forward Derek Willis won’t miss any game time despite his June arrest for public intoxication. A Boone County deputy arrested Willis in Union on June 11 after finding him asleep and lying outside the open driver’s side door of a car. The arrest citation said the deputy noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Willis, who had slurred speech when awakened. Willis was arrested for a first and second offense and released after posting $50 bond. Calipari wouldn’t say what disciplinary steps were taken against Willis.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas gave men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart a contract extension and pay raise. Smart’s first team finished 23-10 and the Longhorns lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season. The school considered that good enough to give him an extra year on his original contract with an additional $100,000 per season. With the changes, Smart will earn $3 million next season and his contract now runs until 2023.
