HAMILTON COUNTY Roosevelt Allen

Roosevelt Allen, 77, passed away Sept. 8, 2016, at his residence.

Terry Lynn Allen

Terry Lynn Allen, (formerly of Soddy-Daisy) born Sept. 20, 1953, passed away from this life on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in his sleep. Lost to this world was a son, father and brother, much loved by his family and friends.

His brothers are heart broken.

Terry served his country in the United States Air Force; and for 30 plus years, with his identical twin brother Bill, had taken part in the Vietnam Era Twin Study On Aging.

His work took him from the Siberian oil fields to the Alaskan Pipe Line.

His first job was with Boiler Supply in Knoxville and he had returned there to work this year.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill C. Allen; sister, Janet Lee Allen; grandparen­ts, Wilfred and Pauline Allen and Bill and Winnie Murphy; and special friend, Brad Stump.

Terry is survived by his wife, Joni Leann; sons, Aaron and Bradley; and daughter, Alisa Boyd; brothers, Bill (Marian) Scott, and David (Kathy) Allen; as well as four grandchild­ren; his mother, Helen Murphy Allen and mother-in-law, Nancy Rose; several nieces and nephews.

Edna Mae Brown

Edna Mae Brown, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in a local health care facility.

Brian Clements

Brian Curry Clements, 68, passed away on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, in Daphne, Ala. A native of Mobile, Ala., he was a long-time resident of Chattanoog­a.

He was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force from 19681974, and obtained the rank of SSGT as an Air Traffic Controller while serving in the Vietnam War. After his military service, he continued as an air traffic controller at Lovell Field, Chattanoog­a until 1981 when he entered the restaurant business.

He worked as a national franchise director until his retirement in 2013, at which time he moved to Gulf Shores, Ala.

Brian had a keen sense of humor and was loved by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Murphey Clements; parents, Donald Robert and Frances Clements, of Mobile, Ala.; and brother, Donald Robert Clements, Jr., of Houston, Texas.

Survivors include his sons, Brian “Curry” (Barbie) Clements, Jr., of Clanton, Ala.; Michael (Mistie) Clements, Matthew (Ronda Lowrance) Clements, Bruce (Julie Fuller) Clements, all of Chattanoog­a; two granddaugh­ters, Logan Clements, of Auburn, Ala., and Adelin Clements, of Chattanoog­a; brother, Bruce (Nelda) Clements, of Lillian, Ala.; and sister, Beverly (Arthur) Womack, of Canton, Ga.

He is also survived by his friend, Sherryl Hebert, of Daphne, Ala.

A graveside service will be held at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery, on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at 1 p.m.

Mamie Coonrod

Mamie Ruth Hemphill Coonrod, 86, passed on Aug. 31, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Clara Odessa Williams Hemphill Gore; husband, George W. Coonrod; daughter, Christine Coonrod Reeves; sons, Marvin Coonrod, David McCary Coonrod; and brother, Marvin Hemphill. She was a faithful member of Miracle M.B. Church.

She is survived by sons Vongoree Coonrod, Leonard Hemphill, Dr. Tonzolone Coonrod, Joe Coonrod; and daughter, Rhonda Coonrod Fears; a host of grandchild­ren, great-grandchild­ren, great-great-grandchild­ren; one sister, Dorothy Hemphill Hammond; three daughtersi­n-law, Kim Coonrod, Renee Hemphill and Ulasie Beaty; best friends, Louise Dossett, Lilly Woods, Liz Hester, Catherine Brown, Nancy Jackson and Christie Petty; a host of other relatives and friends.

Service will be today, at noon at Miracle M.B. Church, with Rev. Stephen Maurice Gilchrist officiatin­g.

Interment in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery.

Jack Fryar

Jack Leslie Fryar, 82, of Chattanoog­a, died at Lifecare of Red Bank on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

He was the youngest son of the late Pleasant Franklin and Emma Laura Huggins Fryar.

He was preceded by his two brothers and their wives, Joseph Bryan (Vera Mae) and Clyde Franklin (Shirley) Fryar.

He was also preceded by his precious granddaugh­ter, Jennifer Rains.

Jack was a lifelong resident of Lookout Valley.

He graduated in the 1952 class of Central High School.

He was football captain of his senior class, 2nd Command of ROTC, was a member of the baseball team. Jack was in the U. S. Naval Reserves.

He retired as a rural postman from the U.S. Postal Service after 41 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ellen Nixon Fryar; daughter, Pamela Fryar Carr and her husband, Chuck; sons, Stephen Leslie Fryar and his wife, Rebecca and Michael Jack Fryar and his wife Marcia; grandchild­ren, Grant Stephen Fryar and his wife, Bri, Benjamin Ross Fryar and his wife, Diana, Jake Weston Fryar, Alyssa Fryar Allison and her husband, Matthew; great-grandchild­ren, Ethan and Henley (Grant), Caitlin Peterson, Emily and Zoe Rye (Jennifer); several nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by sisterin-law, Eva Hall, of Rincon, Ga., and brother-in-law, Jim (Sue) Nixon, of Ringgold, Ga.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West, with Chaplain Mark Scott officiatin­g.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home.

George Green Jr.

George Henry Green, Jr., 61, of Frankfort, Ky., died on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at a local hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Hall Jr.

James Dallas “Jim” “J.D.” Hall, Jr., 78, of East Ridge, passed away on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016.

Jim was born and raised in Chattanoog­a.

He was a graduate of Central High School Class of ’58 and regularly attended Central Connection lunches.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was also a US Air Force veteran. J. D. was a longtime employee of Western Electric, before retiring from AT&T with 35 years of service and belonged to the telephone retirees.

Jim collected all kinds of cars over the years but he liked old ones the most. If he wasn’t with his grandsons, you could find him at a car show or an estate sale.

He was preceded in death by his mom and stepdad, Corrine Wheeler and Burnard Martin; and dad and stepmom, James D. and Ovelline Hall, Sr.

Surviving are his daughter, Janeen “Cheri” and husband, DeWayne Trantham; grandsons, Sammy and Patrick Trantham; sisters, Sylvia Campbell, of Crossville, Tenn., and Katherine Hall, of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, Mike Hall; his companion of 31 years, Judith Parker and all her family; niece, Kara Sluder; and nephew, Eric Clark.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, and from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at the funeral home, with Rev. Christophe­r Sheets officiatin­g.

Burial will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

The family would like to thank Miss Joan and all of her family for taking such good care of “Mr. Jim”.

Floyd Hayes Jr.

Floyd Eugene “Bucky” Hayes, Jr., 57, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at his residence.

Bucky was a lifelong resident of Chattanoog­a, and was employed by Chattanoog­a Publishing Company and also, Dixie Savings.

He was a painter by trade and was of the Baptist faith. His passion in life was spending time with his family, following NASCAR, and the Tennessee Vols.

Bucky was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Knight; father, Floyd Eugene Hayes, Sr.; brothers, Jerry and Lloyd Hayes; and granddaugh­ter, Ashlynn Nicole Brock.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Felecia Hayes; children, Labrell Paige Hayes, Sheena (Andrew) Brock, and Patrick R. Hayes; step-father, Gary Knight; brothers, David (Ama) Hayes and James Hayes; sister, Heather Knight; grandchild­ren, Andrea, Aubrey and Rylan Brock; brother-in-law, Terrell Barkley; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today, at Tennessee Georgia Memorial Park, with Rev. Billy Dean officiatin­g.

Charles Hill

Charles Hill, 62, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in a local hospital.

He will lie-in-state today at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home with the funeral to follow at noon in the chapel with Minister Andre Porter as the eulogist.

Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Martha Hillis

Martha Blevins Hillis, 70, of Signal Mountain, was called home by her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

Martha was the daughter of the late Chester Ellis Blevins and Rosa Lee Walker Blevins.

Martha was a member of Mountain Creek Church of Christ.

She graduated from Red Bank High School in 1964. After graduating from Chattanoog­a State in 1987 Summa Cum Laude, she worked at Parkridge Hospital for 29 years as a Respirator­y Therapist retiring in 2015.

Along with her husband Lane, she owned Adams Square Restaurant on Signal Mountain for several years.

Martha loved quilting, gardening, traveling and steam boating.

Martha was a member of Waldens Ridge Emergency service as a E.M.T., C.P.R. and First Responder Instructor.

She was a recipient of the Frist Humanitari­an award in 1998.

Her three F’s were family, friends and faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Barbara Jean Gibbs, Douglas and Donald Blevins and Margaret Fressola.

Martha is survived by her husband, Lane; daughter, Melanie Pruett; son, Daniel Hillis; granddaugh­ter, Rachel; grandson, Adam Pruett; and great-granddaugh­ter, Ailey Grace Millwood; several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to Waldens Ridge Emergency service or Tennessee Childrens Home.

Gregory Hutchison

Gregory Lee Hutchison, 58, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016.

He was born in LaFayette, Ga., on Sept. 21, 1957, to the late John and Charlotte Hill Hutchison.

As a young man, he was an Eagle Scout, member of Order of the Arrow.

At age 13, he was the youngest Scout member to attend Philmont Scout Ranch, where he hiked 100 miles.

After graduating from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, he attended Tennessee Tech University.

He was a lifeguard and member of the Ft. Oglethorpe swimming and diving team.

He enjoyed spelunking, rappelling and had hiked part of the Appalachia­n Trail.

In his later years, he enjoyed bowling and achieved 5 - 300 games along with numerous other awards. He was employed with the City of Chattanoog­a, was an elder and assistant treasurer at Northside Presbyteri­an Church. He was a former president of the board of directors for the Northside Learning Center, and a former member of board of directors for Hope House at UTC.

He was also a former member of the Chattanoog­a Bowling Associatio­n.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Robin; and son, Ian; sister, Jean (James) Wilson, of Flintstone; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the oncology staff at Memorial Hospital and Tennessee of Oncology of Chattanoog­a.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Northside Presbyteri­an Church, 923 Mississipp­i Avenue, Chattanoog­a, TN.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northside Presbyteri­an Church, the Hope House at UTC, the Salvation Army or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

A private burial was held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in West Armuchee.

Martha Miller

Martha Bell Miller, 91, a lifelong resident of Hamilton County, passed away peacefully with family members holding her hand on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, in a local health care facility.

She was born on Lookout Mountain, Jan. 20, 1925.

She was widely known and loved as an elementary school teacher in Hamilton County and as Mother Goose and Mrs. Claus at Rock City Gardens.

Her personalit­y was legendary and she was an enthusiast­ic promoter of Chattanoog­a and the State of Tennessee.

She left a positive imprint on the lives of thousands of children and adults.

She attended Lookout Mountain Elementary and Dickinson Junior High and graduated from Chattanoog­a High School in 1942. She attended college at Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Chattanoog­a, earning a B.A. in 1949 and a Master’s Degree in 1958.

She retired from the Hamilton County school system in 1981, after 35 years of teaching.

It was her passion to teach children to read and she encouraged lifelong learning. She taught hundreds of children to swim as an instructor with the YMCA and at Camp Ocoee.

As Rock City’s Mother Goose from 1983 until 2005 she entertaine­d children and promoted education and strong values.

She developed the “Ten Cool Colorful Cats of Character” as a teaching tool. She traveled extensivel­y and performed in numerous elementary schools, visiting many states.

She never met a stranger and was known for inspiring everyone to be the very best they could be and for her wonderful Goosey Hugs that were so freely offered.

She was recognised throughout her life for her skill as an entertaine­r and story teller and was named State of Tennessee Ambassador of Goodwill January 20, 2000.

In 2008, Rock City honored her by establishi­ng a scholarshi­p given annually in her name.

Even after her health began to decline, she was able to find ways to brighten the day for others and in 2014 she was selected for national recognitio­n as an exceptiona­l nursing home resident.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Judge Leonidas D. (L.D.) Miller and Edith McAllester Adkins Miller; infant son, Theodore E.“Teddy” Hatchett, Jr.; two sisters, Sylvia Miller Johnson Graham and Portia Miller Wrenn; and two brothers, L.D. Miller, Jr. and Joe P. Adkins.

Survivors include her sister, Rinehart Miller Lackey, of Cleveland, Tenn., and a multitude of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and greatgrand nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her long term caregiver and loving companion, Gregory Alan Voss.

At her request, services will be private.

Ollie Ruth Morgan, 91, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

She worked for more than 30 years at Mercer Baking and Penn Baking.

Ollie was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Jack” Morgan; parents, John Mac and Mary Elizabeth Evans; brothers, Harvey Evans, of Connecticu­t, Lloyd Evans Sr., of Centerhoma, Okla., Pat Evans, of Chattanoog­a; and sister, Alene Berryhill, of Chattanoog­a.

She is survived by her sons, Marshall Thomas “MT” Morgan, of Chattanoog­a, Elroy (Susan) Morgan, of Chattanoog­a, Gene (Susie) Wilson, of Chickamaug­a, Ga.; sister, Louise Evans, of Chattanoog­a; grandsons, Corey (Susan) Morgan, and Brian Morgan.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Lee Fick officiatin­g.

Bernard O’Brien

Bernard John O’Brien, 84, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016.

A native of Lawrence, Mass., he has been a resident of the Chattanoog­a area for the past 22 years, and was a member of the St. Stephen Catholic Church.

A graduate of West Point, he then went on to graduate from Suffolk University School of Law and also attended Harvard for graduate classes.

Mr. O’Brien was retired from the U.S. Government as a Federal Judge for the Social Security Administra­tion.

He served in the U.S. Army for six years and then served in the Reserves.

He retired at the rank of Major.

He was the son of the late Doris and Alphonse O’Brien.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Hopkins O’Brien; sisters, Virginia Lounsbury (Paul), of Danville, N.H. and Donna Adams, of Derry, N.H.; brothers, Lawrence O’Brien (Loretta), Romney, WVa and Daniel O’Brien (Helen), of Methuen, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, with Father Manuel Perez officiatin­g.

Inurnment will be held at a later date in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery.

Bob Palmer

Robert Dean “Bob” Palmer, Sr., 88, went to be with his Savior on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at a local hospice facility.

He was born March 2, 1928, in Piedmont, Ala.

He served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, as they mobilized his National Guard Unit during the Korean War.

He was a graduate of Jacksonvil­le State College with a degree in accounting.

He worked for Chattanoog­a Glass in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He then went to work at some carpet places in Ellijay, Ga., and in Rome, Ga.

In 1975, he came back to Chattanoog­a and opened Complete Bookkeepin­g Service, where he retired just a few years ago.

Mr. Palmer had Choo Choo Kennels for years and also raised and showed pigeons. He had a love for horses and enjoyed watching the Vols play football.

Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Wright Palmer; brother, James Palmer; and son, Perry Palmer.

Survivors include his children, Suzanne Johnson, Bobby (Deborah) Palmer, Greg Palmer, and Mark Palmer; grandchild­ren, Jeff Collins, Kristy Collins, Brandon Palmer and Cameron Palmer; great-grandchild­ren, Darren Gilreath, Stephen Coleman, II, and Noah Collins.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today, Sept. 9, 2016, at the North Chapel of Chattanoog­a Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Linda Pody

Linda Lou Pody, 72, of Chattanoog­a, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, at her home.

Linda was born in Altadena, Calif., and had lived in Chattanoog­a, for the past three years.

She was an R.N. with Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla.

She was a daughter of the late, John Thureson and Nina Temple.

She was an active and devoted member of A.A. for over 30 years.

Survivors include Joseph Pody; son, Michael Pody; daughter, Tamera Pody (Daniel Callas); granddaugh­ter, Lilly Callas, all of Chattanoog­a; two sisters, Vicki (Al) Kopacka, of New Jersey; Joni Weir, of Florida; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice Schult

Mary Alice Schult, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

A longtime resident of St. Cloud, Fla., Mrs. Schult was a retired CNA and enjoyed her time with her patients. She always enjoyed helping others.

She attended Christian Family Church and Westview Baptist Church in Chattanoog­a.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Schult; and brothers, Dayton Eugene Elder and Robert Allen Elder.

Survivors are her sons, James Mark (Judy) Schult, of St. Cloud, Fla., and Jeffrey (Jacqueline) Schult, of Chattanoog­a; grandchild­ren, Eric Schult, Brittany Schult, Autumn Schult, James Morgan Schult, Mary Siedel, Kimberly Siedel and Brandon Schult.

A private celebratio­n of life service will be held for the family.

Johnny Stinnett

Johnny R. Stinnett, 84, answered the call of his savior, Jesus Christ and went home on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016. He was a native of Dayton, Tenn., but had lived in Chattanoog­a, for over 45 years.

Johnny was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.

He was a hard working father who loved his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Johnny was a member of Oakhill Baptist Church in Dayton, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lillie Stinnett.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Alice; brother, Earl Dean (Shelby) Stinnett; sons, Rusty Stinnett, Jimmy Stinnett, Eddie Joe Nation and Tim Stinnett; daughters, Debbie Stinnett, Sheila Garrett, Pamela Henderson and Elizabeth (Robert) Carter; granddaugh­ter-daughter, Rachel (Demetrius) Duncan; 22 grandchild­ren; many great-grandchild­ren, several great-great-grandchild­ren; and his special fur baby, Blossom. Johnny will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

DUNLAP — John Holt, Jr., 64, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

John was a longtime resident of the Chattanoog­a area and a 1969 graduate of Central High School.

H e served our country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. John retired from the United States Postal Service at the Shallowfor­d Office.

He was a loving man, who enjoyed family gatherings and would share his faith, knowledge and time with all who needed it.

John enjoyed all sports, especially the Tennessee Vols.

He was an artist, gardener, golfer, painter, and Rook player.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Holt, Sr.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Janie Giles Holt; son, John, III; and daughter, Adrianne; grandchild­ren, Jordan and Jaden; mother, Zelma Holt; sister, Connie Chambers; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Theodore McClendon

SWEETWATER — Theodore Louis McClendon, 79, departed this life Sept. 3, 2016, at a Sweetwater health care facility.

He was the son of the late Oscar and Georgia Bell McClendon, and was also preceded in death by special aunt, Lillian Morris; sister, Janet McClendon; and brother, Charles McClendon.

He professed his faith in Christ at an early age and joined Park City Church of God Sanctified in Madisonvil­le, Tenn., and later attended St. Peter Primitive Baptist Church in Alcoa, Tenn.

He attended Morristown College and Knoxville College.

He began his employment out of college helping others by working at Taft Youth Center in Pikeville, Tenn.

He was employed and retired after 34 years at Y-12, ‘Union Carbide’ in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

He was well known with all the restaurant owners in Madisonvil­le, because of his frequent dining with all of the eateries in the area.

He enjoyed sports and taking in any basketball and football game, also enjoyed traveling.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two brothers, James ‘J.L.’ (Noreen) McClendon, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lawrence ‘Eddie’ McClendon, of Spring City, Tenn.; Fiancé, Phyllis Anthony, of Alcoa, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Joyce McClendon, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at 1 p.m. at First United Church of Christ in Sweetwater, Tenn., with Rev. Archie Smart officiatin­g and Rev. James Guthrie, Sr. delivering the eulogy.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service from noon until 1 p.m.

Interment will follow at Park City Cemetery in Madisonvil­le, Tenn.

GEORGETOWN — Rev. Ronald Thomas Powell, 74, a resident of Georgetown, passed away Sept. 7, 2016, at the family residence.

He was the son of the late Paul and Martha Smith Powell and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Gail “Missy” Powell; and his nephew, Robby Munger.

Ronnie was a self-employed barber, auctioneer and a long time car dealer.

He was also an ordained minister and evangelist in the Baptist faith. He loved ministerin­g to lost souls. He also loved golf, baseball and collecting old tractors. He was a member and Elder of the Savanah Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Gail Davis Powell; his daughters, Tammy Radar and her husband, Donnie, of Cleveland, Deanna Arthur and her husband, Russ, of Cleveland, Paula Haney, of Cleveland, and Melanie Garrison and her husband, Shannon, of Dayton; his grandchild­ren, Tommy Hayes, Andy Hayes and his wife Lauren, Tiffany Ogle, David Radar and his wife Ashley, Daniel Radar and his wife Michelle, Charlie and Emily Haney, Brinley and Bryce Garrison; great-grandchild­ren, Braxton and Kesslee Armstrong, Caylie and Knox Radar, Kash Hayes and Madeline McGee; his sisters, Judy Weinmann and her husband, Mike, Linda Sherlin and her husband, Terry; his nephew, Rusty Munger; and his niece, Rhonda Boller.
