Castro beats rain, leads BMW

- WIRE REPORTS

CARMEL, Ind. — Roberto Castro was just as good before the rain as he was after the storms cleared and shot a 7-underpar 65 on Thursday for the temporary lead in the BMW Championship.

Heavy rain delayed the opening round for 3 1/2 hours and changed Crooked Stick’s greens from hard and fast to soft and accessible.

Former Baylor School golfer Harris English finished his round at 1-under 71 and was in a 10-way tie for 35th when play halted.

The first round was to resume at 8 a.m. today, with more bad weather in the forecast.

Brian Harman had a 66. Dustin Johnson drove into the water on the 18th hole for bogey, giving him a 67.

Castro was among the 70 who advanced to the third FedEx Cup playoff event. His next goal is to try to get into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup and advance to the Tour Championship.

Evans in front in KLM Open

SPIJK, Netherlands — Ben Evans shot five birdies in his first six holes and finished with a 6-under 65 and a one-shot lead in the opening round of the KLM Open on Thursday.

“I need one good week to keep my tour card,” said Evans, who is ranked 143 in the European Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai. “Hopefully that is this week.”

Eight players, including Dutch amateur Rowin Caron, were bunched behind Evans at 5 under at The Dutch, a par-71 Colin Montgomerie-designed course hosting the tournament for the first time.

Wyatt leads Web.com

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Bobby Wyatt took a one-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau on Thursday in the rain-delayed DAP Championship, the inaugural tournament that opens the four-event Web.com Tour Finals.

Wyatt closed with a birdie for a 7-under 63 at Canterbury Golf Club.

“Did a lot of things well and I have a lot of things to build on for tomorrow,” Wyatt said. “Hit it really well, gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities, not sure I missed too many greens. Anytime you can do that, especially on a course like this where the rough is pretty penal, it gives you a big boost.”

Former Baylor School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga standout Stephan Jaeger, who completed 11 holes, was part of a 10-way tie in eighth place at 3 under.

Eric Axley of Athens, Tenn., was at par through six holes and tied for 42nd, former Dalton (Ga.) High School golfer Blake Adams was 1 over through six holes and tied for 63rd and former Baylor golfer Keith Mitchell shot a 2-over 72 and shared 86th place.

DeChambeau, the former SMU player who swept the 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur titles, birdied the final two holes for a 64.

“It was a lot of fun out there,” DeChambeau said. “Hit the ball a lot better than I have been. I still drove it a little poor. Had a couple duck hooks, which is never fun, but got through that, made some pars on those holes and made a lot of putts. I made a huge putt on 17. If it doesn’t hit the hole, it goes almost off the green. I was lucky enough to make that and, lo and behold, I birdied 18 as well.”
