TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

-

QUARTERBACK

Josh Dobbs had only 91 passing yards and tossed a fourth-quarter interception, but three of his 10 completions went for touchdowns. His legs and mobility were factors, too, as he ran for 106 yards and two more touchdowns

RUNNING BACKS

Jalen Hurd (22 carries for 99 yards) is as reliable a player as Tennessee has on offense, but Alvin Kamara, who caught a touchdown pass, needs more than six touches. John Kelly and Carlin Fils-aime made the most of mop-up duty.

RECEIVERS

Jauan Jennings made an excellent catch on a fade for Tennessee’s first touchdown and Josh Malone made a big play downfield (a 38-yard touchdown catch) for the second consecutive game.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The Volunteers were more physical and consistent than in the opener, but questions and concerns remain. Tennessee tried three different line combinations while finishing with 239 rushing yards and allowing two sacks.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Virginia Tech had just 63 rushing yards after the first quarter as Tennessee’s front four stepped up and took control. Kendal Vickers had a sack and forced a fumble, and Danny O’Brien was disruptive.

LINEBACKERS

The Vols missed some second-level tackles early but settled in. Jalen Reeves-Maybin had 13 tackles, and Darrin Kirkland Jr. was active before leaving due to injury. His potential loss is a huge concern.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Virginia Tech talisman Isaiah Ford was quiet (five catches, 51 yards). Micah Abernathy recovered three fumbles, a school record. The Hokies picked on the cornerback opposite Cameron Sutton, though, and both Emmanuel Moseley and Justin Martin struggled.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Tennessee came up with a turnover in punt coverage and played excellent kickoff coverage other than one long return, but Aaron Medley missed a long field goal after a turnover.

COACHING

Tennessee must figure out how to open games better. The defense settled in and locked up the Hokies after a shaky start. The offense played promisingly for stretches, but the line needs figuring out.
