St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s Powell a state champ

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s Hannah Powell played as an individual Monday and Tuesday and ended up taking home the highest individual honor.

The senior was girls’ medalist in the TSSAA Division II-A golf tournament at WillowBroo­k in Manchester.

Powell did not have the firstday lead after shooting 76. But her par round of 72 was the best by three strokes in the girls’ field Tuesday. Powell had one bogey on each side in her final round, and she offset those with birdies on the par-5 No. 7 and the par-4 No. 9.

Powell’s 4-over performanc­e for the tournament was four shots better than runner-up Victoria England, a sophomore from St. George’s.

Region 3-AAA golf today

The Region 3-AAA golf tournament is today at The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. Play begins with the first boys’ tee time at 9 a.m. The first girls’ tee time is scheduled at 11:06.

The winning boys’ and girls’ teams, along with the top four highest-finishing boys and girls on those teams, advance to the state tournament Oct. 11-12 at WillowBroo­k.

The region field comprises the top three finishing boys’ and girls’ teams from Districts 5 and 6, plus an addition five boys and five girls who qualified as individual­s.

Walker Valley’s boys and girls won the District 5 championsh­ips. The medalists were East Hamilton’s Tyson Venable on the boys’ side and Walker Valley’s Kelsey Cassada on the girls’ side.

Softball field takes shape

The GHSA softball postseason is underway, with five northwest Georgia teams already clinching spots in the state playoffs.

The Region 6-AAA tournament started Tuesday with best-of-three series at three locations, with all three ending in sweeps. As a result, south subregion champ Calhoun, north subregion champ Ringgold, Sonoravill­e and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe earned state berths.

Calhoun will host LFO and Ringgold hosts Sonoravill­e in region semifinal series starting Saturday.

The Region 6-AAAA tournament starts tonight with three best-of-three series. Regular season champ Ridgeland has a bye and has thus clinched one of the region’s four playoff spots.

The 6-AAAAAA tournament begins today as well, with No. 4 seed Dalton hosting Allatoona in a doublehead­er start to a best-of-three series. The 7-AA tournament starts Saturday, with Rockmart, Armuchee, Dade County and Chattooga currently holding the top four seeds.

The Region 6-A tournament will take place next Wednesday and Thursday at Trion with eight teams involved. The two subregion champions will be joined by the next six highest-ranked teams in the state’s power ratings system.
