Lee’s Morgan is South coach of year
Lee University’s Caleb Morgan is the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s NCAA Division II South Region men’s coach of the year for the fall of 2016. His Flames won the region cross country meet last week, and his Lady Flames were third out of 17 teams. “I am very thankful to receive this honor,” Morgan, a former Lee runner, said in a school release. “This award is not possible without the hard work and dedication of my wife,
Kristin, my assistant Joseph Crook and, most of all, our student-athletes. Everyone bought into what we wanted to accomplish this season and understand the goals I have for this program.” Lee will compete in the Division II national meet Nov. 19 in Saint Leo, Fla.

Fourth-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan will host No. 7 seed Bryan College in the Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s soccer championship match today at 2 p.m. Wesleyan (12-5-2) edged ninth seed Truett-McConnell 2-1 and Bryan (10-9-2) advanced on penalty kicks for the second match in a row. The score against Union College was 0-0 through two overtime periods, and the Lady Lions won the shootout 4-2 on made PKs by Ruth Rosales, Kimberly Warden, Mary Mai Berchtold and Paige Klose and seven saves in the match from Morgana Hardt da Silva. No. 2 seed Dalton State and No. 1 seed William Carey will meet tonight at 8 EST in the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship match in Montgomery, Ala., after both pulled out 3-2 semifinal victories Wednesday night. William Carey, ranked 17th in the NAIA, had to rally to tie Bethel and win in overtime, whereas Dalton State had a 2-0 lead on Faulkner but needed Rury Alvarez’s tiebreaking score from a Santiago Moore assist in the 79th minute. The Lee University men’s soccer team won the Gulf South Conference’s 2016 Fair Play Award under just-resigned coach Paul Furey. The Flames had only 19 yellow cards and one red in 18 matches this season. West Florida was second in the league with 23 yellows. “Winning the Fair Play Award was a goal for our team at the beginning of the season,” Furey said in a Lee release. The Flames went 9-7-2, 4-3-2 in the GSC.

Fifth-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan rallied to edge fourth seed Bryan 3-2 in the AAC volleyball tournament quarterfinals Thursday in Kingsport, Tenn. The set scores were 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-12 as Sundara Chinn had 24 kills and 23 digs, Sierra Ingraham had 20 kills and 13 digs and Alexis Crittenden had 52 assists and 15 digs for TWU (16-18). Kailyn Lillie led with 27 digs. Cleveland State Community College is celebrating its 50th anniversary this school year, and part of the celebration is free admission to home sports events. The basketball teams begin TCCAA play this evening by hosting Southwest Tennessee in a doubleheader starting with the men’s game at 5:30, and they entertain Dyersburg State on Saturday, starting with the men at 2. Dr. Bill Seymour, Cleveland State’s president, said in a recent school release that “celebrating our history is important to our entire community. Those who started the college and nurtured our mission over the decades created a significant legacy of excellence.” Said athletic director and baseball coach Mike Policastro: “By having free admission, we want to promote the 50th anniversary of Cleveland State, as well as have the community see our student-athletes perform. We play in a very competitive league.” Both basketball teams won Tuesday at Wallace State-Hanceville, 56-48 in the women’s game with 13 points from Keya Jenkins and 10 plus 12 rebounds from Leisa Butler and 74-62 in the men’s with 16 points from Alonzo Peoples, 13 from Elijah Weems and 12 rebounds with 10 points from Victor Curry.
