‘Old, New, Borrowed, Blue’

No weddings in sight in new In-Town exhibition

- STAFF REPORT

“Old, New, Borrowed, Blue” may be a wedding demand, but it’s also a four-part harmony for artists Helen Brooks and Linda Kerlin.

Living in Sequatchie County, the two have taken those words to heart in their new exhibition of works at In-Town Gallery.

For “Old, New” they used their early memories of growing up surrounded by nature as the basis for their recently created pieces. For “Borrowed,” they looked back at the artists and techniques who mentored them in the past as well as the ones inspiring them now. And “Blue” represents the calming and peaceful elements of the color, incorporated it in their works.

“In my journey to become a better artist, I have the continuing adventure of self discovery, challenge and excitement,” Brooks says in a news release. “Every painting is a new experience, a way to voice my feelings and ideas about the beauty around me, and a constant motivation to find true, original expression.”

Describing her early self as a “flower child,” Kerlin says her works begin without a particular subject and sometimes end that way, too.

“I add lots of color and movement and follow the principles of design until the results are satisfying,” she says in the release. “The painting process for me is a spontaneous peacefulness of layering paint to create movement like a song that takes you away momentarily removing all distractions.”
