Rumors of ‘Rumours’ returning

-

BARRY COURTER: Lisa, I heard a rumor that Black Jacket Symphony will be back at the Tivoli on Friday, and they will be doing a Fleetwood Mac favorite. Can you guess which one?

LISA DENTON: Subtlety is not your strong suit, I take it. So … “Rumours.” Final answer.

BARRY: That was easy to figure out, right? I wonder what my clue might have been if they were doing “Tusk.” Maybe, “Psst, you have something in your teeth.”

LISA: That reminds me: What do dentists call their X-rays? Tooth pics.

BARRY: The big event is really the Chattanooga Film Festival this weekend. Almost 35 movies are on the schedule. This thing has really become a big deal for fans and filmmakers around the country.

LISA: My favorite part is called CFF Salutes Your Shorts. There are seven short films to be shown in this block, which they call a “Whitman’s sampler” of animation, fantasy, a Western, a drama and a dramedy. There are two showings, but fans of jamgrass band Phish will want to know that bass player Mike Gordon will be at the Sunday screening to introduce a film written by him and his 8-year-old daughter. And Emmy-winning artist Wayne White will be here to introduce two films, including a free screening of the 2012 documentary about his life and work, “Beauty Is Embarrassing.”

BARRY: Andre Gower and Ryan Lambert, two of the stars from “The Monster Squad,” will be here as well. I talked to them both last week, and they are really looking forward to the event and hanging out in Chattanooga. The same is true of the California Guitar Trio.

They are coming to town for a show at Songbirds Guitar Museum on Tuesday. By now, everyone should know about Songbirds and their worldclass collection of rare and vintage fretted instruments, but some people might not be aware that they have a concert calendar as well.

The trio is composed of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards, and their shows are full of humor, stories and some really fine guitar playing.

Other shows on the schedule include Kev’n Kinney of Drivin’ N Cryin’ on Friday, local classical guitarist Michael McCallie (April 20), surf guitar legend Dick Dale (April 21), local party favorites The Pool (May 6) and Tommy Emmanuel (May 7).

LISA: The Kevn Kinney show is “An Evening of Songs and Stories,” which should be a good show for that space. The whole band will be here for the final Friday of Riverbend.

BARRY: And my old teammate Greg Dennis, now the coach at Chattanooga State, will lead the baseball team against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field on Tuesday night.

LISA: The regular season starts Thursday against the Mobile Bay Bears. I would say it’s time to start practicing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for the seventh-inning stretch, but that song always sounds

like a practice session.
