The Chattanoog­a Times Free Press was recognized as one of the best Southeast news organizati­ons in the Society of Profession­al Journalist­s’ Green Eyeshade Awards.

The Times Free Press won 13 awards, including nine first-place awards, the most of any newspaper. The contest is among news organizati­ons across 11 Southeaste­rn states.

Times Free Press firstplace awards were for:

› Investigat­ive reporting, to Kendi Rainwater for coverage of the Ooltewah High School rape.

› Disaster reporting, for staff coverage of the Woodmore bus crash.

› Feature photograph­y, for a collection of photograph­s by staff photograph­ers.

› Newspaper graphics, to Matt McClane for an illustrati­on on the Superbowl.

› Magazine illustrati­ons, to Eric Taylor for work in GetOut magazine.

› Magazine graphics, to Taylor and Stephen Ratajczyk for work in Chatter and GetOut magazines.

› Magazine covers, to Taylor for GetOut.

› Online nondeadlin­e reporting, to Joan Garrett McClane and Joy Lukachick Smith for “The Poverty Puzzle.”

› Online investigat­ive reporting, to Rainwater for “Code of Silence,” about the Ooltewah High School rape.

Second-place awards were for: Humorous commentary for columns by Mark Kennedy; editorial cartoons by Clay Bennett; and magazine covers for Chatter magazine.

Since 1950, the Green Eyeshade Awards has honored the best journalism in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississipp­i, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
