Lookouts go down late without Gordon, Corcino in the lineup

- STAFF REPORT

The Chattanooga Lookouts are now down two key players.

One should be back soon. The other could be gone for good.

The Lookouts suffered a rare defeat Saturday night with a 5-4 loss to Tennessee before an announced crowd of 4,025 at AT&T Field. Shortstop Nick Gordon missed his second straight game after being placed on the temporary inactive list so that the top prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization can compete in this afternoon’s Futures Game in Miami.

Though Gordon’s return is imminent, the same can’t be said about Edgar Corcino.

The 25-year-old outfielder, who was born in the Dominican Republic, lives in Puerto Rico and recently became a U.S. citizen, was promoted Saturday to Class AAA Rochester (N.Y.). Corcino went 2-for-4 in Friday night’s 6-1 win over the Smokies to improve his average to .299, which ranked sixth in the Southern League at the time of his promotion.

Corcino also had 29 RBIs in his 76 games with Chattanooga.

First-inning sacrifice flies by Andy Wilkins and T.J. White on Saturday put the Lookouts up 2-0, but Tennessee went ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning on Cael Brockmeyer’s three-run home run to left-center. Chattanooga forged ahead 4-3 in the sixth inning on RBI doubles by Carlos Paulino and Ryan Walker, but the Smokies pulled even at 4-4 when Kevin Cornelius opened up the eighth inning with a homer to right.

The Smokies went up 5-4 in the ninth inning on Andrew Ely’s two-out single to right that scored Yasiel Balaguert.

Chattanooga dropped to 13-3 in the Southern League’s second half and to 55-31 overall. The Lookouts begin a four-game series in Pensacola this afternoon at 5:05 Eastern.
