Irvin won’t be charged for sexual assault

- WIRE REPORTS

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin will not be charged with sexual assault after Florida prosecutors said Monday that hotel video and other evidence aren’t sufficient to prove his accuser’s allegations.

Broward County Assistant State Attorney Christine Adler wrote in a report that without additional corroboration of the accuser’s account, prosecutors “would not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a sexual battery occurred.”

A 27-year-old woman accused Irvin of drugging and sexually assaulting her at the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale in March. Irvin, 51, has insisted for months that he was falsely accused.

Irvin, who settled a sexual assault lawsuit in 2011, told a news conference Monday that these latest allegations had cost him “millions” in endorsements and business opportunities, but declined to give details.

“Just being accused of something like this, this is as devastated as it can be,” said Irvin, a Fort Lauderdale native who works as an analyst for the NFL Network and as a Christian speaker. Irvin was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

He said only murdering someone is worse than falsely accusing the person of sexual assault.

“And this might even be worse,” he said, “because you are leaving someone alive after accusing them of drugging someone and then raping someone.”

He said he and his wife have prayed for the woman, but he wants prosecutors to charge her with making a false police report.

‘Difficult decision’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt addressed the dismissal of general manager John Dorsey and promotion of Brett Veach to that role during a news conference Monday at Arrowhead Stadium.

During the course of the meeting with Kansas City media, Hunt left no doubt about whose decision it was to make the stunning change. “The decision was mine,” he said. Adding that he also moved quickly to inform head coach Andy Reid of his plan to not offer Dorsey a new contract, Hunt echoed what he said when Dorsey was released earlier this month.

“It was a difficult decision,” Hunt said, “but after a thorough evaluation of our football operations, in the long-term interests of the Chiefs I felt it was best to make a change.”

Hunt also said that “John and I haven’t spoken since we parted ways.”

Clean slate for Lewis

NEW YORK — Roger Lewis Jr. will start this week’s Giants training camp with a relatively clean legal slate.

The second-year receiver arrested in early June for operating a vehicle while impaired had that charge dropped, a clerk at the Licking County (Ohio) Municipal Court told Newsday on Monday. Lewis did have to pay fines totaling $175 for traffic violations the night he was arrested.

Although police found a small amount of marijuana in his car after they pulled him over around 4 a.m. on June 4, he was never charged with a drug-related crime.

Lewis, who made last year’s Giants team as an undrafted free agent and caught seven passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, will be competing for a roster spot at the back end of the wide receiver depth chart during training camp. The first team practice will be held on Friday.

Not so lucky Cowboy

DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys, it seems, just can’t help themselves.

Any notion that the off-the-field distractions would dissipate once training camp practices actually began was rendered negative as the team officially made it on field for its first practice of the 2017 training camp.

Wide receiver/kick returner Lucky Whitehead had a warrant out for his arrest after a shoplifting arrest June 22 in Virginia and his failure to appear in court July 6. It was first reported by TMZ.

The court date has been reset to Aug. 10, per court records. He will have to leave training camp to get it taken care of.
