Cash moves on in grass nationals
Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., are in the doubles semifinals and singles quarterfinals today after straight-sets wins Wednesday in the USTA Men’s 60 national grass court tournament at Pontiac, Mich. As the doubles top seeds — with eight national and world age-group titles and four runner-up finishes together — they beat Paul Hoffstein of Pennsylvania and Chris Reynard of Virginia 6-1, 6-0 and face fourth-seeded Californians Geoff Cykman and Andrew Stanley today. Cash, a 5 seed in singles, defeated Stanley 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday and now meets No. 3 seed Maxime Buyckx of Marietta, Ga., while No. 1 seed Vines faces Hoffstein after a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the round of 16.

› For the second time in two weeks this season, Sewanee has a player on the national D3football.com team of the week. This one was after a loss. The Tigers’ second honoree was place-kicker Michael Jacobs, who was 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and added three extra points last Saturday at Washington & Lee. The 3-pointers covered 20, 42 and 44 yards, and the junior now is 13-for-16 for his Sewanee career.

› Sewanee lost 3-2 to visiting Emory in NCAA Division III men’s soccer Wednesday, with Keegan McCombie scoring twice for a 3-0 lead for the Eagles (3-2). Scoring for Sewanee (3-3) were Johnny McNeill and Kyle Johnston, the latter heading in a Rhodes Hall cross.
› Sewanee’s women got their first win of the season while administering the Covenant Lady Scots’ first loss, 2-1. Walker Poe’s score off a save on a Mary Frank shot 2:30 into the second half stood up as the difference for the host Tigers (1-3-1), whose first goal came 20:33 into the match from Kiley Ezzell. For Covenant (3-1), Lizzy Hightower scored from 40 yards out off a Kyra Duble assist just before halftime. Defense dominated, as the Lady Scots had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
› Makena Giles had three goals and two assists as Bryan College won 5-2 in women’s soccer Wednesday at Life University. Ana Ramirez scored from a Giles assist 6:40 into the match for the Lady Lions (2-2), and Giles broke a 1-1 tie from a Ruth Rosales assist at 25:49 and assisted Johanna Rappe’s score at 36:10. Wilma Moberg had both goals for Life (2-3).
› Dalton State’s 4-3, two-overtime men’s soccer victory Tuesday night over visiting Bryan was decided by Santiago Moore’s nifty goal with 1:04 left in the second extra period. Bryan (4-3) is ranked 17th in the NAIA; Dalton State (5-1) is 19th. Moore earlier had assists for Isael Gutierrez and Daniel Valenciano as the Roadrunners took leads of 1-0 and 3-1, and Kevin Villatora blocked a goal kick and scored to make it 2-1. Charlie Clarke scored for Bryan from an Aaron Attree in the first half, and Brad Spooner scored twice in the final six minutes of regulation, including the tying penalty kick in the final minute. Alex Horton had eight saves for the Lions; Samuel Fraire had eight for DSC.
VOLLEYBALL
› Visiting Covenant edged Sewanee 3-2 in Division III volleyball Wednesday, by the set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 21-25, 15-6. That left each team 4-4 for the season. Schuyler Moore had 32 assists and 11 digs and Ginny Moore had 18 kills and 17 digs for Covenant, which got 18 digs from Hannah Stewart and 10 from Emily Moore, plus nine kills from Olivia Becker. Sewanee’s Destiny Stewart had an astounding total of 29 kills, plus 20 digs, while Stephanie Price had 13 kills and Olivia Nichols had 11 kills and 12 digs. Also for the Tigers, Constance Connolly contributed 28 assists and 20 digs, Anna Wilson had 19 assists and Peyton Parent had 19 digs and 11 assists.
› Hope Burnett had 12 kills and Mariah Dunlop and Emalie Hicks added 11 and 10, Dunlop with three aces, in Bryan’s 3-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball home loss Tuesday to Montreat. Kristen Parrish had 31 digs and Veronica Salas had 23 assists and 12 digs for Bryan (2-10, 1-1), while Jennifer Keck had 15 assists.
