‘Backbone-cracking music’

Flow Tribe brings the party to Revelry Room tonight

- STAFF REPORT

As soon as Flow Tribe hits the stage outfitted in colorful, carefully selected suits that are as flamboyant as New Orleans, the city from which the band hails, it’s clear the party has begun.

Flow Tribe is an indie funk band of road warriors who play more than 150 club and festival gigs a year. The band stops at Revelry Room tonight, Sept. 14, for a show at 8 p.m. as part of a tour in support of new album, “Boss,” which was released in April.

“Boss” was produced by New Orleans’ Mannie Fresh, the Grammy-nominated producer who turned out hits for Lil Wayne, Jeezy, 2 Chainz and Notorious B.I.G. The New Orleans collaboration put a new spin on funk and soul for a definitive sound that the Tribe has dubbed “backbone-cracking music.”

That signature sound can most likely be attributed to the longtime friendship of K.C. O’Rorke (vocals, trumpet), John-Michael Early (harmonica, washboard, vocals, keyboard), Russell Olschner (drums), Chad Penot (bass, vocals), Bryan Santos (guitar), and Mario Palmisano (guitar). They are high school pals who’ve been writing music and playing live shows since the band formed in 2004.

Post graduation, they went their separate ways. But after Hurricane Katrina, each returned to his hometown, becoming active in the rebuilding of their community.

Flow Tribe’s current single is “You Know What It’s About.” Billboard.com premiered the music video for that single.
