Navy quintet plays at UTC Tuesday

Chattanoog­a is one of five cities in two states selected to host a performanc­e by the United States Navy Band’s Brass Quintet on its fall tour. The quintet will play a free concert in UTC’s Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Navy personnel who will perform at UTC are Chief Musician Brandon Almagro, trumpet, New Berlin, Wisc.; Chief Musician Carl Lindquist, trumpet, Sandusky, Ohio; Chief Musician Jason Ayoub, French horn, El Paso, Texas; Chief Musician Colin Wise, trombone, Hampshire, Ill.; and Musician 1st Class James Hicks, tuba, Lake Butler, Fla.

Since 1971, the Navy Band Brass Quintet has performed at ceremonies and events throughout the Washington area, including high-profile performanc­es at the White House, Pentagon, State Department and Washington Navy Yard. Notable performanc­es included inaugural events for President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney in 2000 and 2004, the dedication of the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksvill­e, Penn., and remembranc­e services at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.

The quintet’s repertoire includes over 400 works spanning six centuries, with many compositio­ns arranged by its members. The ensemble’s performanc­e at UTC will include eight pieces ranging from classical — J.S. Bach’s Fugue in G Minor — to “Jive for Five” by Paul Nagle.

One of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibi­lities involves touring the country. All the band’s performing units make annual concert tours through specified regions of the country. The concerts are meant to be entertaini­ng to veterans, families, individual­s as well as anyone interested in joining the Navy.
