Beast Feast at zoo

Watch zoo animals chow down at carcass feedings

- STAFF REPORT

The Chattanooga Zoo will hold its first afterhours event dedicated to animal enrichment on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Beast Feast will give guests the opportunity to observe the zoo’s carnivores as they act on their natural instinct and indulge in carcass feedings. Throughout the evening, guests will learn from zookeepers why carcass feedings and other animal enrichment is vital for the physical, emotional and mental health of the animals.

The animals won’t be the only ones to chow down. Visitors attending Beast Feast may purchase food and drink at the zoo’s restaurant, Wild Burger, or from refreshment carts. There will also be cash bars serving beer and wine for $3 per drink.

“Carcass feedings are very common enrichment practices within many AZA-accredited zoos. Carcass feedings simulate feedings that would take place in an animal’s natural habitat in the wild, and we are excited to have the opportunity to share this experience with our community,” says Dardenelle Long, Chattanooga Zoo’s chief executive officer and president.

Tickets for adults are $6 zoo members, $12 nonmembers; $4 and $8 for children. Beast Feast tickets are sold in the Zoo Gift Shop between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door if any remain.
