HOW THEY SCORED

-

KNOXVILLE — Staff writer Rob Harvey examines the scoring drives from Tennessee’s 24-10 win over Southern Mississippi on Saturday:

FIRST QUARTER

TN — Jarrett Guarantano 3-yard run (Aaron Medley kick), 10:59

Drive: 9 plays, 49 yards, 4:01 Key play: The Vols were set up in great field position after Evan Berry returned the opening kick to the Southern Miss 49-yard line. That was Berry’s first kickoff return since the opening game against Georgia Tech. The Vols took advantage of the field position and scored on their first possession for the first time all season. TENNESSEE 7, SOUTHERN MISS 0

SECOND QUARTER

USM — Parker Shaunfield 27-yard field goal, 8:16 Drive: 10 plays, 77 yards, 5:18 Key play: Tennessee seemed to have the Golden Eagles pinned down in their own territory, but a 70-yard pass play to Korey Robinson on thirdand-long moved them to the Vols’ 15-yard line. The pass surpassed the Golden Eagles total yardage for the game to that point.

TENNESSEE 7, SOUTHERN MISS 3

TN — Medley 38-yard field goal, 2:42

Drive: 12 plays, 68 yards, 5:28 Key play: On a second-and-8, Guarantano passed to Jordan Murphy on the sideline for a first down. Guarantano went down on the play, forcing the Vols to burn freshman Will McBride’s redshirt. McBride stayed in the game for three plays, as he handed the ball off twice and just missed Josh Palmer in the end zone for what would have been a touchdown.

TENNESSEE 10, SOUTHERN MISS 3

THIRD QUARTER

TN — John Kelly 20-yard run (Medley kick), 5:15

Drive: 1 play, 20 yards, 0:07 Key play: The Vols needed just one play to score after Emmanuel Moseley’s second career interception, as Kelly stiff-armed and trucked his way into the end zone to extend the lead.

TENNESSEE 17, SOUTHERN MISS 3

TN — Kelly 3-yard run (Medley kick), 10:59

Drive: 4 plays, 19 yards, 1:07 Key play: The Vols were trying to add a field goal to their lead, but a leaping call on Southern Miss gave them an automatic first down. The Vols got even better field position when Golden Eagles coach Jay Hopson ran out onto the field and picked up an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty.

TENNESSEE 24, SOUTHERN MISS 3

FOURTH QUARTER

USM — Kwadra Griggs 1-yard run (Shaunfield kick), 6:45 Drive: 10 plays, 95 yards, 3:23 Key play: With Griggs making his first appearance of the game, the Golden Eagles turned their first five plays into first downs. The Vols forced just one third down on the drive as Southern Miss used a mix of run and pass to keep the defense off guard.
