Austin Peay holds on to top Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Ahmaad Tanner ran for 104 yards and a touchdown and Austin Peay won the Sgt. York Trophy outright for the first time with a 35-28 Ohio Valley Conference win over Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

Coach Will Healy’s Governors (6-4, 5-1) clinched the York Trophy with in-state wins this season against Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT-Martin. Healy is a Chattanoog­an who was an assistant at UTC before taking the job in Clarksvill­e.

Austin Peay never trailed though the Golden Eagles (1-8, 1-5) closed to within a touchdown three times after the Governors built a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Kyran Moore had 88 yards rushing and a touchdown, Daryl Rollins-Davis added 87 yards, Tre Nation ran for 71 and a TD and Jeremiah Oatsvall ran for 46 yards and a score to go with 72 yards passing. Austin Peay finished with 423 yards rushing and 7.4 yards per carry.

Luke Ward passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns for Tennessee Tech.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Mitch Mersman’s third field goal of the game, this one from 22 yards out with one second left in the game, gave the Skyhawks an OVC win over Southest Missouri’s Redhawks.

UT-Martin (5-4, 3-3) has back-to-back wins after three-game losing streak.

Jesse Hosket staked the Redhawks to the lead with a 12-yard run in the first quarter and put them ahead again, 14-13, with a 5-yard pass to Logan Larson on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Freshman Dresser Winn passed for 224 yards and the Skyhawks’ lone touchdown, a 10-yard strike to Londell Lee. UT-Martin had 420 total yards while holding the Redhawks (2-7, 2-4) to 307 — 86 through the air.

Marquis Terry had 20 carries for 154 yards to spearhead the offense for SEMO.

Virginia University of Lynchburg 0

NASHVILLE — Michael Hughes fired six touchdown passes, Patrick Smith catching three, as Tennessee State rolled to a nonconfere­nce win against winless Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday.

Hughes completed 15 of 20 passes for 262 yards against the Dragons, who compete in the National Christian College Athletic Associatio­n.

Smith caught four passes for 118 yards and Newbold had three catches for 83. Nine ball carriers compiled 174 yards rushing for the Tigers (5-4). Tennessee State scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, a Hughes-toNewbold 4-yarder coming less than five minutes into the game, and led 38-0 at the half.

Corye Smith led the Dragons (0-8) with 51 yards on a pair of catches.

SEWANEE, Tenn. — Devin Hayes threw four touchdown passes, two of them to Jordan Gunter, as the Colonels improved to 8-1 with the Southern Athletic Associatio­n shutout of the Tigers.

Hayes was 22-of-31 for 290 yards and Tanner Young was 3-for-3 with another TD throw for the visitors, and Jaylon Hibbs led their receivers with five catches for 93 yards and a score. Colin Burnam ran 16 times for 94 yards.

For Sewanee, which finished 3-7 in Travis Rundle’s first season as coach after a winless 2016, Warren Holland gained 79 yards on 18 carries and Travis Van Vleck was 13-of-24 passing for 63 yards and an intercepti­on. William Phillips had a 78-yard kickoff return.

UTEP 3

MURFREESBO­RO, Tenn. — Brent Stockstill threw three touchdown passes in his return from injury and the Middle Tennessee defense allowed just 137 total yards to help the Blue Raiders beat UTEP.

Stockstill, who hadn’t played since suffering a cracked sternum in a Week 2 loss to Syracuse, was 13-of-30 passing for 190 yards with one intercepti­on. Tavares Thomas had nine carries for 68 yards and a touchdown and Ty Lee had six receptions for 80 yards and a score for Middle Tennessee (4-5, 2-3 Conference USA).

UTEP falls to 0-9, 0-5.
