State senator tweets ways to irritate liberals at Thanksgiving
A Republican state senator from Strawberry Plains, Tenn., spent Thanksgiving encouraging people to poke fun at their liberal relatives over the holiday meal.
In a series of tweets, state Sen. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, spelled out suggestions for irritating liberal relatives, including such activities as wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat to dinner or naming the turkey Hillary.
He said the tweets, which were written by a member of his staff who manages the account, were meant to be amusing, but he also wants to send a serious message that people need to lighten up more around politics.
“There have been so many articles about politics at the Thanksgiving table and how Trump has divided friendships and everybody’s afraid to talk politics,” Niceley said. “I think everybody’s taking it too seriously and we just need to lighten up a little bit.”
On his Twitter account, Niceley listed eight# Ways To Annoy Family Liberals At Thanksgiving.
His suggestions include making everyone stand for the national anthem before dinner and ending the blessing with “even the haters and losers.”
Niceley also suggests serving only Russian dressing with the salad and pointing out that the turkey was “roasted over an open fire with the maximum carbon footprint possible. Bonus if you shot the turkey yourself.”
He’s not the only one talking about politics around the holiday dinner table.
In one tweet, Niceley referenced a tweet by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, encouraging followers to print out a chart on the GOP tax plan to bring to Thanksgiving dinner and inform their conversations.
Niceley said it’s not necessarily a bad thing to talk about politics with family, as long as the conversation remains civil.
Talking about a liberal friend, Niceley said, “He knows how conservative I am and I know how liberal he is, but we still get along great and have a lot to talk about. It’s this idea of being so mad at everybody all the time — I don’t get it.”
A Trump supporter, he said he is at a loss to explain why the country is so divided.
“Everybody talks about how strained relationships are over this Trump making America great again,” he said. “It’s almost like some people don’t want America to be great again. I’ve been in politics 30 years, and I’ve never seen it so divided. But there are a lot of good things going on. The stock market is up. Unemployment is down.”
