Giants hire Gettleman

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants are turning their rebuilding process over to an old hand who believes in old-time football. The Giants hired former Carolina executive

Dave Gettleman, 66, as their general manager on Thursday, bringing back the man who spent 15 seasons with the franchise before going to the Panthers and helping them reach the Super Bowl during the 2015 season. “Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a general manager and a proven track record,” co-owners

John Mara and Steve Tisch said in a released statement. Gettleman will be the Giants’ fourth general manager since 1979, following George Young, Ernie Accorsi and Jerry Reese, who held the job for 11 seasons before he was dismissed on Dec. 4, along with coach Ben McAdoo.

MINNEAPOLIS — A photographer who has covered the Minnesota Twins accused Miguel

Sano of assault, posting on Twitter that the AllStar third baseman forcibly attempted to kiss her after an autograph session at a mall in 2015. Betsy Bissen tweeted Thursday that she screamed and resisted Sano until he gave up “after a solid 10 minutes of fighting.” Bissen, who has worked for publications including the popular fan blog Twins Daily, wrote in her tweet she long feared that telling her story would cost her access to photograph Twins games. Sano, who spent part of the 2015 season with the Chattanooga Lookouts, said he “unequivocally” denies the allegation. Major League Baseball has begun an investigation, MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said. The Twins said they learned of the allegation only Thursday, and their statement said the team and MLB “take these allegations very seriously,” but they offered no further comment. Sano spent part of the 2015 season with the Chattanooga Lookouts.
